How did she end up here looking for Ryan again? And causing such a
scene at the law firm.
While I was pondering this, I noticed her confidently heading toward
the office area, her heels clicking against the floor.
The surrounding chatter started almost instantly.
“Who is she? Mr. Hudson’s girlfriend?”
“Looks like some rich girl. I’ve seen her come looking for Mr. Hudson a
few times.”
She found her way to the waiting room amid the chatter.
“Ryan, are you here?” She called out cheerfully, but the moment her
gaze landed on me, her expression soured, “Oh, it’s you.”
“Hello again, miss,” I replied with with a slight smirk, unable to hide my
amusement.
“You work at Oracle Attorneys? As Ryan’s colleague?” She raised an
eyebrow, her tone dripping with disdain, “Then why did you claim to be
his friend before? Colleagues and friends aren’t the same thing. Our
Ryan doesn’t have female friends.”
I glanced at the clock, choosing to ignore her attitude, “I’m here for an
interview.”

“Oh, so you’re not even a colleague.” She smiled smugly, her
confidence palpable. “Stop trying to get close to Ryan. Someone like you–he’d consider it a waste of time to even look at you.”
“Really? Well, he doesn’t seem to be looking at you either,” I shot back
without missing a beat.
“You-” her face turned pale with anger.
Before she could retaliate, the receptionist returned, clearly flustered,
“Miss, Mr. Hudson will see you now.”
“See? Ryan cares about me,” she sneered, flipping her hair before
sauntering off with a triumphant smile:
I rolled my eyes, exasperated.
This woman was something else–acting like I was a rival when I
hadn’t even done anything.
Not long after, I was escorted to the interview room.
My nerves surged the moment I stepped inside. Facing a panel of seasoned interviewers was daunting enough, but my heart skipped a beat when I noticed Ryan sitting among them.
‘Wait! Was that Ryan? He was one of the interviewers? Wasn’t the
firm’s owner above interviewing someone applying for a junior
attorney position? And what about that woman? Did he dismiss her
that quickly? How was he already back in this room?‘

I pushed aside my racing thoughts and forced a professional smile.
The questions came quickly, and I tried my best to answer. Most were professional and straightforward, though a few were challenging enough to make my voice falter.
One interviewer leaned forward, studying my resume, “Your resume
shows you haven’t worked for six years. Why are you now looking to
join our firm?”
Taking a deep breath, I steadied my voice, “Six years ago, I set aside my career and dreams for my family. Now, I’m ready to start fresh. During that time, I never forgot my aspirations or stopped honing my
knowledge.”
Ryan’s lips curved into a smile, “It’s never too late for a fresh start.”
His gaze held mine for a moment longer than necessary, his eyes soft and admiring. I felt my pulse quicken and forced myself to focus.
when the interview ended, I stepped out of the room, relieved yet
completely drained. My back was damp with sweat, a clear sign of
how much pressure I’d felt.
Whether I got the job or not, interacting with such accomplished
professionals had been an invaluable experience.
I was heading toward the elevator, ready to leave for the restaurant
where Ryan and I’d planned to meet later.
We were supposed to discuss my divorce from Vincent over dinner.

But before I’d gone far, Ryan’s voice called out behind me, “Gabrielle,
come to my office.”
I turned, startled, pointing at myself, “Me?”
The curious stares of people around us felt heavy on my back as I
followed him.
