Chapter 5 You Still Love Claire, Don’t You?
I was caught off guard by his blunt guess about my pregnancy.
Before I’d seen him with Claire, I was so excited to tell him the news.
But now, all that excitement was gone. For a moment, I didn’t even want to tell him the truth.
As I tried to figure out how to explain, he shook his head and said, “That’s impossible. We’ve been using protection lately. You couldn’t be pregnant.”

I bit my lip. ‘Sure, we had used protection, but it wasn’t foolproof. This baby was a surprise, wasn’t it?‘
Since Vincent had already dismissed the idea, I decided to keep quiet and just went along with him, “No, I’m not pregnant. My stomach’s just upset.”
If he still loved Claire, there was no point in telling him about the baby anyway,
“Go see a doctor if you’re not feeling well.” His words were laced with concern, but his tone was cold.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
The difference in how he treated Claire and me was glaringly obvious.
When Claire was sick, he rushed her to the hospital. When I felt unwell, all I got was a cold remark.
“Yeah, I will,” I said, keeping my voice even.
“With Toby missing, we should postpone our wedding,” he added, rubbing his forehead in frustration.
“Okay,” I replied flatly.
The wedding had been Grandma’s biggest wish, and I wanted to honor it. But if Vincent wasn’t into it, there was no point in pushing.
“Get some rest. I’ll find a way to track Toby down.” Vincent patted my shoulder.
My heart ached. I wanted to confront him about how close he was with Claire–I needed to know why.
But when I tried to speak, I realized I didn’t have the strength to ask him questions.
After Vincent left the bathroom, I washed my face and stumbled out, feeling like a zombie.
This nightmare of a day was unbearable. In a single day, I might lose the two most important people in my life.
My son, and my husband.
As I reached the stairs, I saw Vincent on the phone in the hallway.
His voice was so different from the cold tone he’d used with me. Now it was soft.
He said, “Claire, where are you? Calm down, don’t do anything stupid. I’m coming to find you right now.”
He hung up quickly and started to leave.
My heart felt like it was being crushed. I couldn’t take it anymore and rushed to grab him.
