What mother would ever want to terminate her own child? If I hadn’t
run out of options, how could I make such a tough decision?
My eyes started to burn as I fought back the tears.
The doctor pressed his lips together, saying nothing more, “Since you’ve made your decision, I’ll arrange—“.
But before he could finish, his phone suddenly buzzed in his pocket.
The doctor glanced at me apologetically, “I’m sorry, I need to take this
call.”
As the doctor stepped over to a small partition to answer the call, my
eyes unwillingly drifted to the test results on the desk.
My baby already had a heartbeat…
Given more time, this baby would develop into a complete person! And
here I was, about to take away this little life!
I thought about how the baby might one day softly call me “Mama,” just like Toby used to. My nose stung and my vision became blurry.
“Syl-”
Sylvia stepped forward immediately, “I’m here, Gabby, I’m right here!”
“This decision I’m making is the right one, isn’t it?” I took a deep
breath. “I can’t let my heart get soft, not now, right?”

Sylvia pressed her lips together, then nodded after a long pause, “That’s right, Gabby, you’re doing the right thing.”
I lowered my eyes, tears pooling in them. ‘Baby, Mama’s so sorry. If there’s ever a chance in the future, will you come find me, and let me be your mother again?‘
“Sorry for the wait,” the doctor said, returning with an apologetic look.
“It’s fine.” I took a deep breath, pushing the pain down. “Doctor, can we go ahead with the surgery now?”
“Just a moment, I need to review the results carefully.” The doctor sat down and scanned the reports thoroughly.
“Oh, this isn’t good-” He suddenly frowned. “Your uterine wall is too
thin. Performing the procedure now could be risky.”
“What kind of risk?” Sylvia asked, her voice tight with concern.
“You might not be able to have children in the future.”
“What?” Sylvia gasped.
I felt my heart race. “Then–what should I do?”
“I suggest you think this through carefully,” the doctor paused, looking
at me as he put down the report. “With your thin uterine wall, getting
pregnant will be harder than it would be for most people. This pregnancy is precious. If you go through with the termination, you
might not have another chance at having children.”

I bit my lip hard, my palms sweating with anxiety. After a long
moment, I stood up, “Thank you, doctor. I’ll go home and think about
- it. If I still decide to go ahead, I’ll come back to see you.”

After leaving the consultation room, I absentmindedly rubbed my belly,
my mind spinning.
“Gabby, maybe this baby is meant to be yours?” Sylvia said, her voice
full of mixed emotions. “Actually, you could raise the child on your
own after the divorce. You’d have me too–I can earn money, and we
could raise the baby together!”
“Thank you, Syl. I’ll think about it more.” I said, managing a smile,
feeling warmth spread through me.
Just then, Sylvia suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me into a fire
escape stairwell.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, confused, as she peered nervously outside.
“Is that Claire over there?” she whispered. I turned and saw a woman,
heavily bundled–up, sneaking towards the obstetrics department.
“It’s her.” I murmured, recognizing Claire immediately.
A wave of relief washed over me. I silently thanked Sylvia for noticing
Claire. If she had seen me here, it could have been disastrous.
