Chapter 39 “Baby, You’re So Sweet.”
This question had been on my mind since childhood.

When Claire called me an outsider last time, my doubts only grew
stronger.
Could parents really be this biased? Was it possible that Claire was
Jean’s only biological daughter?
My question left Jean stunned for a moment. Finally, she snapped, “Gabrielle, what kind of crazy talk is this? No wonder Vincent can’t stand you, you’re always so suspicious!”

“Are you going to make those desserts or not? Your sister is waiting!”
she shouted.
“No! Let Vincent make them for her!” I shot back, hanging up
immediately.
After hanging up, I took several deep breaths.
Jean was avoiding my question, and I still didn’t get a clear answer. I had so many doubts about my background. ‘What was the truth? Was I just being paranoid?‘
Looking at Grandma’s photo on my nightstand, I felt lost.
My phone rang again. Thinking it was Jean again, I almost hung up,
then I saw it was Sylvia.

“Syl?” I answered.

“Gabby, how are things?” Sylvia’s gentle voice calmed me down a little.
“What things?” I asked.
“You and Ryan! Any progress?”
“Come on! We’re just friends, what progress?” I couldn’t help but smile
wryly.
“Friends can become lovers! Why not consider dating him? You’d
become Vincent’s aunt–that would drive him crazy.”
“Your imagination’s running wild! That’s soap opera stuff–it won’t happen to me. Let’s drop the Ryan topic, there’s really nothing there.” I
was already dreading what other outrageous things Sylvia might say.
“Any updates on the shooting case?” Sylvia finally got serious.
I filled her in on the latest developments, and we analyzed everything
together.
Before hanging up, I hesitated, then said, “Syl, would you come with
me to the abortion clinic the day after tomorrow? I made an
appointment.”
“What? Are you sure? I thought you were just venting last time-”
Sylvia was shocked.
“No, I’ve made up my mind. I need to cut all ties with Vincent, and I
don’t want this child to be born without a father. Besides, I’m not in a

“Okay, I respect your decision. I’ll go with you,” Sylvia agreed.

After hanging up, I touched my belly. I’m sorry, baby, it’s time to say
goodbye.‘
Despite my firm decision, as a mother, my heart was still filled with reluctance and guilt towards the baby.
Before bed, I got a message from Ryan:
[I’m being discharged tomorrow. Don’t forget to come.]
I smiled. ‘Did he really need to remind me? As if I would forget?‘
I quickly replied:
[Of course I remember. I’ll definitely be there.]
After putting down my phone, I quickly fell asleep.
I had a strange dream. In it, a man was holding me, kissing me passionately… His kisses made me weak in the knees, and he whispered seductively in my ear, “Baby, you’re so sweet.” Lost in the kiss, I looked up at the man’s captivating eyes. I froze–it was Ryan’s
face!
I jolted awake, sitting up in bed, realizing it had just been a dream. “That dream–felt so real,” I mumbled to myself, feeling hot all over as
I recalled the scene.
‘Why would I have such a dream? Was I subconsciously attracted to Ryan?‘ I shuddered, then checked my phone, “Is it that late already? Oh god, I’m running late!”
Ryan was being discharged today, and I couldn’t afford to be late for
our appointment.
