Chapter 26 Who’s Behind This?
I did’t have personal grudge against Brandon – we’d never even met.
That only left one possibility – someone had put him up to this.
There had to be someone pulling the strings.
Just thinking about someone plotting against me in the shadows, wanting me dead, and maybe even kidnapping my son, it sent chills down my spine and made me break into a cold sweat.
“Nobody told me to do it, nobody!” Brandon shook his head violently,
his face draining of color, “I just couldn’t stand you, that’s why I
wanted to kill you!”
I found that ridiculous.
“Couldn’t stand me? We’ve never even met – what the hell could I have
done to you?” I gave him a pointed look, narrowing my eyes, “You’re
just scared to name the person behind this, aren’t you?”
“I don’t know anything, there’s no one behind this, no one—” Brandon
kept shaking his head, his voice cracking, looking like he was about to
lose it.
“Something’s off with him,” Vincent muttered, frowning.
I stepped in closer to Brandon.
“Gabby-” Vincent’s voice was laced with concern as he moved toward
- me.

Ignoring him, I leaned in closer to Brandon, whispering near his ear, “This isn’t the only crime you’ve committed, is it? Did you kidnap a kid
recently?”
Brandon’s eyes went wide, and he froze. Then, with a sudden jolt, he
shouted and violently shoved me away, “Stay back, all of you, stay
back!”
“Watch out!” The police officers drew their guns, aiming at Brandon.
Vincent caught me in his arms, holding me protectively, “Gabby, are
you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I snapped, pulling away from him, “Even if I wasn’t, it’s none
of your business.”
Vincent’s face contorted into an ugly grimace, like he’d just tasted
something rotten.
“I don’t know anything, I don’t know! Stop asking me, stop-” Brandon’s
voice cracked as he suddenly became hysterical, mumbling to himself
and trying to bang his head against the wall.
Thankfully, the police quickly restrained him.
“Mr. and Mrs. Hudson, the suspect is unstable. We can’t continue the
interrogation today,” the officer said, “We’ll keep investigating and try
to uncover the truth as soon as possible.”
“Alright,” Vincent said, nodding, “Thank you. If you need any help from
us, just ask.”

“Officer, I suspect Brandon is also connected to a child disappearance
case,” I added after a moment of thought, “He might’ve kidnapped my
son, Toby.”
“Do you have any evidence?” the officer asked.
I shook my head, ” No concrete evidence yet, but the two incidents happened so close together. I don’t have any enemies, so I think it’s a
strong possibility they’re linked.”
“Alright, we’ll look into it.”
After leaving the police station, Vincent grabbed my arm, speaking
urgently, “Why did you say that to the police? Have you found
something about Toby’s disappearance?”
I wasn’t about to tell him that Uncle Ryan was helping me with th
investigation. Instead, I pulled away from his grip and said coldly, “It’s
just a hunch. I’m going home now.”
“Where are you going?” Vincent’s voice cracked, and his eyes
reddened.
“To my place, where you don’t exist,” I shot back matter–of–factly.
“Gabrielle!” His voice rose with anger.
I stayed completely unbothered.
At that moment, a horn honked nearby. A red sports car pulled up, and Claire stepped out, smiling brightly as she walked toward us.
“Vincent!” she called sweetly, flashing a bright smile, “I made a huge
dinner. Want to join me for a candlelight dinner?”
