I rolled my eyes at her, but her comment still stirred something in my
chest.
Uncle Ryan- I stunned, likes me?
That’s ridiculous! I’ve always been in Claire’s shadow. I’m so average
that no one notices me. All the guys around me always chasing after
Claire. Even those who seemed interested in me were just trying to get
closer to my sister.
And who’s Uncle Ryan? His family background, looks, physique, career
success, and so on, he’s top–tier in everything.
How could someone that possibly like me?
“Why not?” Sylvia poked my forehead, “Have some confidence, would
you? Your family’s made you think you’re not as good as Claire, but
honestly, you’re better than her in every way.”
“You’re pretty, and you’re capable too. If it weren’t for Vincent, you’d be
a famous lawyer by now,” Sylvia sighed. “Vincent’s uncle – Ryan
Hudson, right? He’s way better than Vincent.”
“He went to the same university as us, even the same law school, just
a few years ahead. Maybe he’s liked you since college. Think about it – why else would he risk his life to save you?”

Her words hit me like a bucket of cold water, making something click
in my brain.
But I still couldn’t just assume Ryan liked me.
After all, there was an unbridgeable gap between us.
“Let’s eat first, stop thinking about it,” Sylvia ladled some mushroom soup into my bowl. “Though, if Ryan really likes you, you two would make a great couple.”
“If you married Ryan, Vincent would lose it! You’d be his aunt – ha! Just
thinking about it is wild!”
“Can’t the food keep your mouth busy?” I shot her an exasperated
look.
Sylvia just shrugged and went back to attacking her food.
But her random comments had completely messed with my head.
Ryan’s handsome face kept popping into my mind, making my heart
race.
After dinner, just as we reached the restaurant entrance, Vincent
called.
After hesitating, I answered.
“What’s up?” My voice was icy.
“Gabby, get to the police station! They caught the person who tried to
kill you at the wedding!” Vincent’s voice was full of excitement.
“I’ll be right there!” I hung up immediately.
“What happened? Why the sudden rush?” Sylvia asked, confused.
“They found the shooter!” I clenched my fists, “I’m going to the police
station. I need to know who wanted me dead!”
“I’m coming with you!” Sylvia was excited too, but just as we were
about to leave, she got a call and had to work overtime at the law firm.
She kept reminding me to be careful before reluctantly leaving. I
grabbed a cab to the police station.
On the way, I got a call from my mom.
“Gabby, I heard you’re divorcing Vincent?” Her voice was unusually
soft.
“Yes, that’s right.”
“When are you filing? Since you’ve decided to end it, just do it quickly.
Don’t drag it out. Your sister-” Mom hesitated.
