Chapter 17 Who Kidnapped My Child?
“We’ve found some leads,” Ryan said, signaling his driver to start the car.
Then he sent me a video.
With shaking hands, I opened it and saw a masked man carrying a sack, jumping out of the school bathroom window and landing in some bushes!
The video was blurry, but I could make out the sack moving, like someone was struggling insider
“How did you find this video?” I gasped, my heart racing. I checked all the school’s security footage and found nothing.”
“The timing lines up–when the masked man appears is exactly when Toby disappeared. And what he’s carrying looks like it could be Toby. This has all the signs of a kidnapping.” Ryan said. “We got this footage from a drone. The kidnapper was smart enough to dodge the school’s security cameras, But he was caught on the drone.”
I was astonished.
I’d searched everywhere, found nothing, and yet Ryan had found this lead so quickly?
I couldn’t help but admire and feel deeply thankful for him.
“Your team is amazing!” I looked at him, my words barely able to express my gratitude.
“Unfortunately, all we have right now is this video. We can’t confirm if it’s Toby, and we haven’t traced where the masked man went,” Ryan sighed. “But at least we have a direction now.”
“Do you and Vincent have any enemies?” Ryan continued. “Kidnappers usually want money or have a personal grudge. Since no ransom has been demanded, so it’s probably not about money.”
I lowered my head, thinking hard.
I’d never made any enemies, but Vincent certainly had his fair share–mainly business rivals, competitors of Hudson Enterprises…
But would they really kidnap Toby? If they did, wouldn’t they have already contacted Vincent with demands?
As I tried to think of anyone I might’ve crossed, a pretty face suddenly flashed in my mind. I froze.
Claire?
I trusted my gut feelings, but this time, I wasn’t sure.
After all, Claire was my sister. Even if she wanted my husband, surely she wouldn’t go this far.
I felt a wave of alarm. My head started pounding, and as I pressed my hand to my temple, biting my lip
in pain, Ryan reached out to steady me, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep investigating.”
His voice was calm, reassuring me. I nodded slowly, “I don’t know how I can ever repay you.”
“There’ll be plenty of chances in the future.” Ryan smiled gently, “Just don’t back out when the time comes.”

Back at the hospital, Ryan returned to his room. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders seeing that he looked okay, with no signs of discomfort.
1 went back to my room too. Since my injuries were minor, I was actually able to leave. I packed my things and quickly finished the discharge procedures,
Before leaving the hospital, I sent Ryan a message.
(Uncle Ryan, I’m getting discharged now. I need to take care of some things. Take care of yourself, and I’ll come visit you later]
After a moment, he replied:
(Let me know if you need anything.]
I felt so moved. He’d done so much for me. But…why?
