Chapter 20: The First Touch
Adam’s brow furrowed as he stared at Irene. There was something unsettling about having a woman in his space, especially one who kept throwing his carefully ordered world into
chaos.
“What do you mean lie down?” Thomas’s voice carried a note of surprise, bordering on
alarm.
Irene’s response came with the calm assurance of someone who’d done this countless times before, though inside she was acutely aware of the tension radiating from Adam. “Well, how else am I supposed to examine his legs?” She turned to address the triplets perched attentively in the living room. “Okay kids, stay put and behave, alright?”
“Yes, Mom!” three voices chimed in perfect unison.
“And no interrupting during the examination.”
“We’ll be good!” They nodded solemnly, though their eyes sparkled with barely contained
excitement.
Thomas shifted uncomfortably, glancing between his boss and the petite doctor. “Should we… use the sofa, or would the bedroom be better?” The question came out hesitantly, his mind racing through potential awkward scenarios. After all, Adam wasn’t exactly known for letting people – especially women into his personal space.

“If possible, a bed would be ideal,” Irene replied, her tone purely professional. “The flat surface allows for better blood circulation. But if that’s not an option, the sofa will do.”
Thomas looked to Adam, waiting for his reaction. After a moment of tense silence, Adam
gave a curt nod. “The bedroom.”
The master bedroom was exactly what you’d expect from someone like Adam – sleek, modern, dominated by blacks and whites. The kind of space that screamed ‘bachelor pad‘ but with an edge of sophisticated restraint. No woman had ever been allowed in this sanctuary before. Irene took in the space with clinical detachment, her focus entirely professional.
Thomas bustled around, adjusting lights and gathering pillows. He switched off the air conditioning, then fiddled with the bed’s electronic controls until it reached an optimal

height. Meanwhile, Adam transferred himself from the wheelchair to the bed, brushing off any attempts to help with a sharp look that brooked no argument. His movements were stiff but determined, each gesture a statement of independence.
“You have medical equipment here, right? I’ll need some for the examination,” Irene said, watching Adam settle himself.
“Oh yeah, we’ve got a fully equipped medical room. I’ll grab whatever you need.” Thomas practically sprinted from the room, returning moments later with an impressive array of medical equipment. From basic examination tools to sophisticated diagnostic devices, it was clear no expense had been spared.
Irene inspected each piece methodically, nodding with approval. “Nice. These will do.”
Thomas couldn’t help but frown slightly. “Dr. Sterling, these seem rather… basic? Given Mr. Haven’s condition-”
“The most advanced equipment doesn’t always provide the answers we need,” Irene cut in smoothly. “Sometimes it’s the fundamental examinations that reveal overlooked details. Previous treatments have clearly been ineffective, so we need to reassess from the ground
up.”
Thomas blinked, then bowed slightly. “I apologize for my presumption.” His expression showed newfound respect for this woman who’d published groundbreaking papers in neurosurgery and pioneered several surgical techniques.
Throughout the preparation, Adam remained silent, his hands resting at his sides. His gaze never left Irene as she organized her equipment with practiced efficiency. There was
something about her movements – precise, professional, completely focused on her task
that both irritated and fascinated him.
When Irene’s fingers first made contact with his leg, Adam’s entire body tensed. It had been years since he’d allowed a woman this close, and his natural instinct was to pull away. Her fingers made direct contact with his bare skin as she pushed his pant leg up, and the warmth of her touch sent unexpected sparks of awareness through his body. But her clinical movements remained impersonal as she assessed muscle condition and nerve
response.
“Your muscle tone is excellent,” she noted, her fingers moving with practiced skill. “You’ve maintained a consistent physical therapy routine.”

Still, Adam couldn’t quite suppress his discomfort. It wasn’t just about the physical contact – though that was unsettling enough. It was the way she seemed completely unfazed by him, by his position, by this whole situation. Most women who got this close to Adam were either trying to seduce him or secure some business advantage. But Irene… she might as well have been examining a mannequin for all the personal interest she
showed.
Thomas watched from his position near the door, fascination warring with concern on his face. In all his years working for Adam, he’d never seen anyone affect his boss quite like this. The great Adam, who could reduce corporate rivals to stammering messes with a single look, was practically squirming under the calm, professional attention of this petite
doctor.
“The nerve damage pattern is unusual,” Irene murmured, more to herself than her
audience. Her fingers traced a path along Adam’s calf, completely focused on her
examination. “Previous diagnoses missed some key indicators…”

Adam’s jaw clenched. Having this woman this woman in particular – touching him with
such casual confidence was doing strange things to his composure. The fact that she
seemed entirely oblivious to his discomfort only made it worse.
But beneath his irritation, a grudging respect began to take root. Her movements were
precise, her observations keen. She worked with the focused intensity of someone who knew exactly what they were doing and couldn’t care less about anything else.
Outside in the living room, three small faces pressed against the bedroom doorframe, watching the scene unfold with barely contained excitement. Their mother, totally in her element, was helping their father, even if neither adult realized the full significance of
this moment.
“See?” Alex whispered to his siblings, his eyes bright with triumph. “I told you Mom would be perfect for this!”
For once, Lucas didn’t argue with his brother. He was too busy watching their parents with an expression of pure satisfaction. “Operation Mom’s Happiness is totally working!”
Lily just smiled, clutching her teddy bear closer as she watched her mother work. Sometimes, she thought, grown–ups needed a little help seeing what was right in front of them. Good thing they had three brilliant kids to help them figure it out.
