Chapter 74 Endless Ties
Perhaps it was because the young man knew about her connection with Alexander that he felt line uncomfortable.
“If I buy this car you’ll get a commission, right?” Amelia asked.
“Yes,” the young man simply replied.
“No need for a test drive. I’ll pay now.”
This was the first car he had ever sold. The dealership offered excellent benefits, but he knew perfectly the real reason–they wanted Alexander to have a place where he could show up and trouble hirm whenever he pleased.
The Summers family was extremely wealthy. The people surrounding Alexander might not have been high society, but in the eyes of ordinary folks, they were considered upper–middle class, many of them owning small factories or businesses.
They were eager to cozy up to Alexander, hoping to gain favor with the Summers family.
When Alexander returned home with a fresh handprint on his cheek, the first person he saw was Milly.
Milly looked surprised. “Alexander, what happened to your face?”
He plopped down on the chair next to her and deliberately raised his voice. “Amelia hit me.”
Celia, who had been watering the flowers, slammed the watering can in anger when she heard this.
“Is she out of her mind? Is there no one who can keep her in check anymore?”
Milly’s eyes flickered thoughtfully, then she smiled sweetly.
“Didn’t Amelia use to listen to Jessica? Maybe we should ask Jessica to have a little chat with her?”
The “Jessica” she referred to was Jessica Payne, Nolan’s biological mother.
In the past, Amelia had practically worshipped Jessica. A single word of disapproval from her would leave Amelia restless for days.
Now that Amelia was acting out of control, it was time to reel her back in.
When Amelia received a call from Jessica, she remembered what Dylan had told her and finally put the pieces together.
She answered the call, and a gentle voice came through.
“Amelia, are you free tonight? Why don’t you and Nolan come over for dinner? It’s been so long since you both visited.”
Jessica no longer lived at the old Hale family residence. Only the two elders remained there now. Everyone else had moved out and only returned for occasional gatherings.
Amelia wasn’t sure how she had treated Jessica in the past, but the tone was cordial, and good opportunity to bring up breaking off the engagement.

“All right, Jessica.”

After hanging up. Jessica turned to Nolan, who was seated beside her, and tapped him lightly on the forehead.
“See? Amelia’s quite obedient, isn’t she? Nolan, don’t blame me for saying this, but if you really like Milly, then break off the engagement and be with her properly.”
Nolan had once thought the same thing, but now he felt uneasy.
Amelia hadn’t thrown a fit or begged him to stay, like she used to. No dramatics, no threats. And that unsettled him.
He used to feel a sense of satisfaction when she clung to him. After everything she’d done for him, he’d hav kept the engagement going a little longer.
“Mom, I’ve been trying to end it for ages. She’s the one who won’t let go. You have no idea how much it annoys me.”
Jessica, while being soft–hearted toward Felix, was otherwise a very capable woman. She hadn’t risen to her current position by chance.
Nolan grabbed his car keys, sounding impatient. “I’ll go pick her up. She’ll be over the moon.”
“You’re such a kid.”
Nolan set off in high spirits. By the time he reached the top floor of Hale Corporation, his steps were practically bouncing.
But he was told Amelia had already left five minutes ago.
Fuming, he rushed to the underground parking lot and finally caught up to her.
He’d intended to scold her, but when he saw her beautiful profile and her fair skin glowing under the lights the words caught in his throat.
“Amelia, I’m here to pick you up. Don’t start acting difficult today.”
Hearing his voice, Amelia felt a wave of revulsion.
She opened her car door to get in, but Nolan grabbed it.
“Will you ever stop? I came to pick you up. What more do you want? Listen, my mom really likes you, so don’t throw a tantrum in front of her later.”
With that, he pulled Amelia away from her car and shut the door. “You’re coming with me.”
Amelia was about to shake him off when a voice called out from not far away.
“Nolan, Amelia, you two…”
Nolan and Amelia were standing very close, his arm loosely around her waist. From a distance, it looked lik they were embracing.
Nolan jumped away as if he’d been caught red–handed.

“Milly, what are you doing here?”
Milly glanced nervously at Amelia. “It’s because of Amelia, I…”
She didn’t even have to finish. Nolan could already imagine it–Amelia must have texted Milly on purpose to set up this misunderstanding.
Amelia was always this scheming.
He shot her a glare.
“Why are you always like this? I really thought you’d changed.”
Thanks to the Hale family’s genes, he was undeniably handsome and tall, and when he spoke, he carried a natural air of superiority.
