Chapter 29 Family Greed
Unexpectedly, the youngest daughter, Jessica, proved herself capable and leaped into high society at the wealthy wife of an influential man, elevating the entire Payne family’s social status.
The idle and unambitious Felix even latched onto Nolan and even the crumbs that fell from Nolan’s fingers were enough to ensure the Payne family never had to worry about food or drink.
Jessica’s success sparked envy and resentment in her two older sisters. The eldest sister, Irene Payne, had long been married but her husband was not only abusive but also a gambling addict who had raked up significant debts.
The wedding gifts she had received for her wedding had been entirely used to fund her younger brother Felix’s education, yet Felix was not academically inclined. Despite tens of thousands of dollars spent on private tutoring, he didn’t even manage to graduate form high school.
The second sister, Sharon, always had high standards for choosing a partner. Seeing that her younger sister could marry into wealth, she believed she could do the same.
Over two decades later, now in her forties, she still remained unmarried. Fortunately, in recent years, she and her family had found a willing benefactor in Amelia, who financed their lavish lifestyle, allowing them to live comfortably.
Amelia mentally sorted out these family relationships and felt a wave of irritation.
Sharon noticed Amelia’s silence, assumed she had the upper hand. “Amelia, what’s with you today? Why are you so reluctant to spend money? Don’t you want Nolan to like you anymore? Let me tell you, Nolan listens to me, his second aunt, more than anyone else.”
Amelia sneered inwardly, realising how foolish she had been in the past to tolerate this behaviour. She calmly took the bag from Sharon’s hands and pointed to another, more refined design displayed behind them.
“Could you please bring me that one instead?” she asked the sales associate. The sales assistant glanced between the two women before retrieving the new bag.
Sharon’s panic was immediate. “What are you doing? I want this bag! That one doesn’t suit me!”
Ignoring her protests, the sales associate handed the new bag to Amélia. Amelia tried it on and said, “This one will do.”
She promptly paid for the item with her phone. Sharon’s eyes gleamed with excitement. The new bag was even more expensive. It cost 80,000 dollars!
“Alright, this one works too. Actually, I think I could pull this off,” Sharon said, reaching for the bag.
But Amelia held onto it firmly. “Excuse me, ma’am, but this bag is for me. If you attempt to take it, I’ll have to call security.”
Sharon’s face darkened, the weight of losing the 80,000 dollar bag evident in her expression. “Amelia, let go! That’s my bag!”
Amelia turned to the sales associate and asked politely, “Do you have security here?” The associate quickly summoned security, who restrained Sharon.

Sharon froze. Her brother, hospitalized? Spoiled and pampered his entire life, he had rarely experienced hardship.

Amelia’s expression darkened as she left the store with the bag. Lily followed behind and asked, “Are you really keeping that bag?”

“Lily, let’s go. Tonight, we’ll check out my new apartment. I’ll cook dinner for us,” Amelia suggested. Lily forced a smile, her expression stiff. “Alright.”
Meanwhile, Sharon immediately called Nolan after leaving the store. “Nolan, I heard your uncle is in the hospital. What happened?”
Nolan was surprised since he had no clear answer. All he knew was that Amelia had caused a scene earlier, embarrassing Timothy in a private room to the point Logan had to intervene.
However, as for Felix’s hospitalization, Timothy had offered no explanation. When he questioned Felix himself, the man vaguely implied it was due to Amelia.
Amelia truly was a source of constant trouble. Nolan thought.
Nolan felt irritated and reflected on his disdain for his mother’s side of the family, especially his two aunts. Their greed was palpable as they were always asking for money.
Fortunately, Amelia had managed to keep them at bay in recent years. Why had they resurfaced now? “Uncle Felix is fine,” he replied curtly.
Sharon was relieved but her tone quickly shifted to anger. “Amelia took an 80,000 dollar bag from me and insulted me. Amelia even claimed it was on your orders. You need to teach her a lesson and make her return my bag.”
