Chapter 2 I Lost My Memories in a Car Accident
After saying his piece, he wrapped his arm around Milly’s waist and left without hesitation.
Amelia looked at the string of numbers on her phone. The man who had just called himself her fiancé had shown no concern for her at all. From beginning to end, he had only defended Milly.
Her heart felt as though it was being constricted by an iron wire. Her face turned even paler as an uncontrollable ache spread through her chest.
But Milly seemed to have already made a full recovery, while she herself who had been blamed nearly lost her life.
How could a man like that be her fiancé?
Three days had passed since she disappeared and not a single person from her family had tried to contact her. In her mind, there was only a faint shadow of someone she thought might be her boyfriend.
Without hesitation, she dialed the number. On the other end, a formal, businesslike voice—likely an assistant—answered the call.
“Ms. Summers?”
“Hello, is this Dylan Hale? I seem to have lost my memory in a car accident and I…” Amelia started to explain.
“Mr. Hale just returned to Solandis and is still undergoing rehabilitation. The last time you called him, Ms. Summers, you used the exact same excuse. You claimed there had been a car accident and asked him to come pick you up.
“He really did and the two of you ended up in a car crash. Ms. Summers, if you still have any conscience, please stop contacting Mr. Hale,” the assistant said.
“But I…”
Beep . . . beep . . . beep…
The call was abruptly cut off.
Amelia let out a sigh and leaned back against the bed. Her headache with a faint sense of confusion and fear for the future lingered in her heart.
She glanced at the unlocked phone. Thankfully, the payment feature still worked.
She handed the phone to a nurse who had just entered, she asked, “Could you check if there’s enough money in this account to pay the bill?”
She noticed a payment record from a week ago. 40,000 dollars had been spent, apparently on a pair of men’s cufflinks. It seemed she wasn’t someone who lacked money.
The nurse broke her train of thoughts. “There’s insufficient balance. Ms. Summers, the cost of your emergency care and hospital stay totals to 4000 dollars.”
Amelia lowered her head, her delicate face filled with confusion. Just last week, she’d spent 40,000 dollars. How could her bank card have less than 4000 dollars?
She found a number saved in her contacts under “Mom.” She took a deep breath, and dialed the number.
As soon as the call connected, a scolding voice rang out. “So you still remember to call me? Amelia, how old are you? Why are you playing these ridiculous games? Nolan and Milly have been dating behind your back for a long time now.
“But you, the moment you saw them kiss, you dragged Milly out with you and got into a car accident. You’re so irresponsible. Honestly, I’d rather you just disappear!
“Milly is always thinking of you as her sister, yet all you do is pull these despicable stunts. How did I end up giving birth to such a vile person like you?”
Amelia opened her mouth to ask something, but a soft voice came through on the other end. It was Milly saying, “Mom, I think Amelia might have really lost her memory this time. Don’t be so harsh on her.”
“Memory Loss? How many times has she ‘lost her memory’ this year? She’s such an idiot, always pulling the same trick. If she has any guts, she’ll stay gone forever. That way, I won’t have to deal with her and risk getting high-blood pressure.
“Milly, stop defending her. Haven’t you endured enough over the years? Nolan confessed to you first, and yet Amelia being the shameless person she is, won’t confront him directly but keeps picking on you instead. You’re too kind-hearted.”
As Amelia listened, her heart ached. Was this really her biological mother speaking? Just like Nolan, she hadn’t asked once about her injuries.
She bitterly chuckled and asked, “Are you really my mother?” How could a mother treat her own daughter this way?
“What are you implying, Amelia? Are you trying to drive me crazy? If you don’t want to acknowledge me as your mom, fine! I don’t want to claim you as my daughter either, with all the shame you’re bringing! You’ve caused so many scandals just to chase after Nolan, and you’re still at it. Why do you have to compete with Milly for everything? Even when I bought her an extra car, you got all pissed off. Do you even consider her your sister? I don’t want to see you around for a while. Didn’t you lose your memory? Well then, don’t come home. Our family will be much better off without you. You’re nothing but bad luck!” Then she hung up.
Amelia stared at the disconnected call. The dull ache in her chest won’t go away. She felt something wet on her face. Reaching up to touch her face, she realized she was crying.
She opened her phone and scrolled through her social media feed, finding a recent post from Milly.
It was a photo of a large floor-to-ceiling window with a view of the river in Solandis, fireworks filling the sky. The caption read, “Surrounded by my loved ones.”
In the reflection of the glass, she could make out Nolan and two blurry middle-aged figures. Her chest tightened painfully, so much so that she almost doubled over from the hurt.
