I want to check Helena’s place today, Augustin announced at breakfast the next morning. His hand rested casually on my thigh under the ban waves of warmth through my body.

“Sebastian’s aunt?” I echoed in surprise. I should have made the connection from the last name Holbrooke, but I’d assumed they were different Lamines
‘I don’t need permission to investigate a murder,” Augustin replied firmly, his thumb drawing on my thigh that made it difficult to concentrate.
*I’ll come!” Freya volunteered immediately, earning a displeased look from Adryx. I understood why she’d jumped at the chance, she knew Adryx would try to dissuade her because of her pregnancy.
Bryloch frowned. “Are you sure about this plan?*
“My mother wasn’t the real target,” Augustin explained, “Maybe Helena knew something that’s why she was killed.”
‘Does this have anything to do with the money transfers Eliza’s been tracking?” Bryloch.asked.
I suddenly remembered Eliza’s call. Should I bring it up now?
“The anonymous transfers point to Fireland and Forestvale,” Augustin revealed, his fingers now intertwined with mine. “I told Eliza to pause her investigation. We’ll find another way to trace them.”
He brought my hand to his lips, the brief contact sending a jolt through my body. “There’s a buildup of personnel in both regions. Someone’s trying to destroy my family.” His eyes darkened. “My father had many enemies. I might need to call on distant Levenston relatives for help.
I squeezed his hand in silent support, and he flashed me a grateful look.
“When do we leave for Helena’s place?” Adryx asked, “And who’s going?”
Augustin smiled, bringing my hand to his lips again. “We can make it a date. Bring your mates.”
‘Scarlett and I have a doctor’s appointment,” Bryloch said.
‘Go to your appointment first,” Augustin suggested. “Then decide if Scarlett should join us.” He nodded at Bryloch. “Thank you for everything you’re doing, brother.”
As the serious discussion subsided and breakfast resumed, Augustin’s hand returned to my thigh, this time venturing higher. His touch became more intimate, making my pulse quicken.
He leaned close, surrounding me with his brandy and blizzard scent that always seemed to intoxicate me like an invisible caress. He gently nibbled on my earlobe, then moved to the sensitive spot on my neck, softly sucking on my skin.
The public display of affection made me nervous and excited at the same time. I struggled to maintain my composure as my body responded to his touch.

Augustin immediately sat us both up, wanting to look directly into my eyes.
Seeing his tension, I smiled reassuringly, letting him know it wasn’t something serious enough to warrant such concern.
“Are the women in the harem allowed to have phones?” I asked, the question clearly catching him off guard.
Augustin’s expression grew serious. “No, we can’t let them have phones. Information leaks could endanger Clifflands‘ security.”
He gently placed his hand on my soft cheek, misunderstanding my intention. “My kind–hearted woman,” he pleaded, “please don’t ask me to make decisions that might endanger Clifflands.”
I shook my head, softly kissing the hand on my cheek, then covering it with my own, pressing it against my face. I closed my eyes briefly, enjoying the intimate touch before opening them again with a serious expression.
‘I need you to be rational and calm about what I’m about to tell you,” I requested, emphasizing that I wanted him to control his anger.
Augustin looked confused, not understanding why I would ask this.
Taking a deep breath, I began explaining last night’s discovery: I’d left barefoot to avoid waking him while checking on Scarlett, but accidentally overheard Eliza talking on a phone.
I described Eliza’s conversation in detail, mentioning how she told the other person things were tense, she couldn’t get something for them, and they should wait until security loosened during the “All Regions Tournament.”
