As Sebastian departed, a silver–haired man with sharp features took the central podium. Francis Vasquez, the Elder Council’s spokesperson. His cold eyes swept over the chamber before landing on our box.
“Alpha King Levenston,” he began, “The Elder Council recognizes your presence but reminds you that judicial matters fall within our purview. You are here as an observer only.”
Augustin’s face remained impassive, but I felt his body tense beside me. “I understand the Council’s position,” he replied evenly. “Please, share your findings with us all.”
Francis nodded to a stern–faced woman I recognized as Azalea Gray. She stood, her dark robes swirling around her ankles.
“We have investigated the death of Helena Holbrooke and the subsequent framing of Evanth Levenston,” she announced. “Theron Caudill has confessed to planting evidence in an attempt to implicate Evanth. We need only decide on the punishment.”
“Without a proper trial?” Augustin’s voice cut through the chamber like ice. “Without due process? Interesting how you criticized me for acting too quickly, yet here you are, ready to pass judgment without a full investigation.”
Murmurs rippled through the chamber. Azalea’s face tightened with annoyance.
“We have a confession-
“A forced confession,” Augustin interrupted. “Did you even ask why Theron would implicate my brother? Or who might have pressured him to do so?” He stood, commanding the attention of everyone present. “My team discovered that Theron was coerced. His pregnant mate was threatened if he didn’t cooperate.”
‘We have letters as evidence. All have been copied for your records.”
Glenn Cole, another Elder, raised his hand. “May/we see these letters?”
Augustin nodded. “Of course. And since the Elder Council seems unable or unwilling to properly investigate this matter, I will be taking over the decision- making process,”
The chamber erupted in shocked whispers. Augustin waited for them to die down before continuing.
