Chapter 16
Tears streamed down her face, clinging to his leg like a drowning woman.
Rhett looked at her like she was something rotten.
His voice was low. Dangerous. Final.
“I don’t love you. I’m bored of you.”
“After Vivian left, even you lost your charm.”
“I’m your benefactor. You were just one of the more favored toys I kept around. My affection was a gift. Without it, you’re nothing.”
“From today on–we’re done. I’ll have your things delivered. The villa is being reclaimed. After your punishment, don’t ever let me see your face again.”
The moment those words hit, Faye collapsed, eyes lifeless as she was dragged away.
Rhett pressed his fingers to his temples, the pounding in his skull growing louder.
Since Vivian left…
erything had lost its flavor.
Even work felt dull and unbearable.
He finally understood-
t was never about her not being able to leave him.
It was him who couldn’t leave her.
He thought she’d never escape.
That she needed him.
That she’d be trapped by his power, by his wealth.

But she’d proved him wrong–brutally.
And the old him…
The man who once loved her so completely…
Would’ve hated what he’d become.
Because once, he truly had loved her.
That love just… didn’t survive time.
He stared out the window at the traffic below, a void settling into his chest.
Nothing seemed to matter anymore.
The cell phone on the side table kept lighting up, a call from his good friend Charles.
“Rhett, we’re having a party tonight. You in? Bring your little side piece–but leave your wife out of it, that ice queen kills the mood.”
Rhett’s brow furrowed.
His voice was low, dangerous:
“I’ve broken up with Faye. And if you ever say a word against Vivian again–pray your daddy’s company can survive what I’ll do to it.”
Silence.
Charles froze on the other end.
The background noise died out.
The whole room fell still.
“…You’re kidding, right? You broke up with Faye? What about Vivian?”
“Divorced,” Rhett muttered, voice hollow.
That one word landed like a grenade.

No one said anything for a while.
Even the music was turned off.
“…Wait, what? Are you serious?” Charles asked again, his voice a little shaky.
Rhett didn’t answer.
That silence… was answer enough.
Some of them held back their joy, others faked their concern.
“Come on, Rhett, we know you’re hurting,” one of them said, lifting a glass.
“Drink it off. That’s what we do, right?”
Eventually, Rhett agreed.
He joined the gathering.
Sat in the corner of the private room, brooding.
Drank bottle after bottle in silence.
His friends surrounded him, fake empathy dripping from their voices.
“Vivian must be insane. With her background? Marrying into the Sinclair family was a jackpot. What
the hell was she thinking?”
“Exactly. So you had another woman. Big deal! Everyone does.”
“You were loyal for six years, man. One mistress and she loses her mind? Unreal.”
But their words only grated at him.
So fake. So loud. So wrong.
Clang.
He slammed a bottle onto the table.
The entire room froze.

He scanned the faces in the room, something cold creeping into his expression.
“Where are Charles and Caleb? Why aren’t they here?”
Charles and Caleb were brothers, but polar opposites in personality.
Charles was a notorious playboy.
Caleb, on the other hand, was quiet, disciplined–known for staying away from the chaos of their elite social circle. It was said he’d carried a torch for the same woman for years, waiting patiently for her… never approaching, never confessing.
Before anyone could explain where they’d gone, Charles’s voice came through on speaker from the lounge outside–lighthearted, teasing.
“Caleb, didn’t you say you’ve been in love with Vivian for years? Rhett really divorced her. This is your shot.”
“I’ve been working to create this chance for you for a long time. If you don’t take it now, don’t blame me for giving up on you.”
“Bro, if you still don’t start dating, you’re gonna age out of the game. This time, make it count!”
His tone was careless, but the intent behind his words was sincere.
Caleb’s reply was calm.
“I won’t waste this chance. I’m already abroad.”
“I was too late last time. I didn’t tell her how I felt. This time, I won’t be late again.”
His voice was steady, but every word slammed into Rhett like a wave crashing over jagged rock.
