Augustin’s POV
No one spoke. No one dared. A few nodded quickly, dropping their gazes in submission.

Well done, my King, Bryloch said through our pack link as the room began to empty.
Juno sat silently in the passenger seat as we drove home. Something was clearly bothering her, but I decided to wait until we were home to discuss it.
I glanced at her, admiring her courage during the hearing. She deserved a reward for her bravery and support. My wolf, Fenris, growled within me, urging me to break tradition and mark her immediately.
Two more months, I reminded myself, though it felt like an eternity. I wanted her–needed her–to be fully mine.
I placed my hand on her thigh, squeezing gently. “You were incredible today. You deserve a reward.” My fingers traced small circles on her skin, inching higher.
She parted her legs, giving me room. The scent of her arousal hit me like a wave, sweet and heady with desire. Fenris howled in my mind, demanding I claim what was mine.
Mark her now. Make her ours completely.
I shook my head, trying to clear it. The wolf’s demand was powerful, almost overwhelming.
“What’s wrong?” Juno asked, her voice husky.
“Fenris,” I admitted. “He’s… impatient.”
She smiled, understanding immediately. “Two more months,” she whispered, but her hand covered mine, guiding it higher.
“Though I’m not sure I can wait that long either.”
“Eyes on the road, Alpha King,” she teased, her voice light despite her quickened breathing.
For a moment, I considered pulling over and taking her right there on the side of the road. The thought was tempting–too tempting. I growled low in my throat, my grip tightening on the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.
“Tease,” I murmured, pressing harder on the accelerator. We sped past Adryx and Bryloch’s car, and I caught Bryloch’s knowing smirk in my rearview mirror. I couldn’t get home fast enough.
I pulled up to the manor entrance and barely waited for Juno to get out before I was rushing her inside. I didn’t speak to anyone we passed, which made Juno laugh softly. Once in our bedroom, I captured her lips in a hungry kiss, my hands already working on her clothes.
Just as I was about to continue, someone pounded on the door.
“Augustin! How could you do this?” My mother’s voice penetrated the wood.
I groaned, setting Juno down and zipping up my pants. She chuckled, and I felt a flash of irritation. My mother had never

knocked like this before.
Opening the door, I was unprepared for what happened next. Mother stormed in and slapped me hard across the face. The room fell silent.
‘I could tolerate this behavior, but I had warned her never to strike me again. When she tried to slap me a second time, I
caught her wrist, growling low in my throat.
“Don’t, I warned.
Juno wrapped her arms around me from behind, trying to soothe me. Augustin, please calm down.”
Tears streamed down my mother’s face. “How could you arrest your own brother? I did what she asked!” She pointed accusingly at Juno, her finger trembling with rage. “I kept Evanth away from the hearing like she demanded! So why did you send soldiers to drag him away in silver chains like a criminal?
I turned to Juno, shocked. She hadn’t told me about this. Her eyes pleaded with me to understand, wide and anxious.
“Did you tell my mother to keep Evanth from the hearing?” I asked, my voice carefully controlled despite the storm brewing inside me. Fenris growled, confused by my conflicting emotions–anger at being kept in the dark, yet understanding of her protective instinct.
Juno nodded, her scent filled with anxiety. “I did,” she admitted, “I was trying to protect you. I was worried Evanth and
Quentor were planning something against you.” She took a shaky breath. “Evanth is the only one who could challenge you, who could hurt you without consequences.”
“How dare you interfere in family matters!” my mother hissed, her grief momentarily overcome by anger. “You’re not even marked yet!”
“Mother,” I warned.
Looking into Juno’s eyes, I knew her intentions were good. Despite my anger at the implications of what she’d done, I refused to reprimand her in front of anyone. We would discuss this privately.

understand why soldiers still came for him with silver chains! What did you tell them he did?”
Juno couldn’t respond. Her silence confirmed the conversation had indeed happened.
“Mother, Evanth forged my signature and seal,” I explained, trying to keep my voice level. I placed my hands on her shoulders, steadying her. “He sent Theron to threaten Alpha Matthew. He tried to start a war.”
Her face crumpled. “No. No, he wouldn’t. He’s a good boy.” She shook her head violently, backing away from my touch. “You’ve always been jealous of him. Always!”

He’s your brother! Your blood!” she cried, her grief making her irrational. “And you choose her over your own family: She gestured wildly toward Juno.
This isn’t about choosing sides,” I tried to explain. “This is about treason.”

But she wasn’t heating anything. She just kept crying, repeating no over and over as she backed toward the door, unable to accept the reality of what her favorite son had done.
