Chapter 5
Ralph nodded as soon as I finished speaking, and two bodyguards stepped forward, slamming Melvin to the floor.
One guard yanked him up by the hair while the other positioned himself in front of him.
They pummeled him, hitting his chest and back until his agonized cries echoed endlessly
around us.
Arms crossed, I watched with satisfaction.
Melvin was tossed around like a ragdoll. At first, he gritted his teeth and tried to tough it out, growling, “How dare you hit me? I’ll call the police and have every one of you thrown in jail!”
I nodded toward Ralph. “He’s talking too much. Knock his teeth out.“!
“Understood.”
One of the bodyguards drove a kick into Melvin’s jaw. Blood and a tooth flew from his
mouth.
He finally broke. “S–Stop! I’m sorry! Willow, please, I apologize! I didn’t know who I was messing with! I’m trash. I’m scum! Please, just let me go!”
Jenny’s face drained of color as she yanked Finn close, recoiling in shock. “Have you lost your mind? This is illegal! You’re ordering an assault! Do you want to end up in prison? I’ve got it all on video! I’ll report this!”
I chuckled lowly, pulling out my phone and tilting it mockingly. “Chief Zetterberg, the last time we spoke, you offered to take me to dinner. Seems fitting, considering I’ve just dealt
with some trash here.
“Do you have time to handle a bit of cleanup? Oh, and regarding my stolen items–I found the culprit. Be a dear and come by.”

The response was obsequious. “I’ll take care of it right away, Ms. Wolpert.”

I ended the call, ignoring Jenny’s ashen face, and ordered the bodyguards, “Don’t stop.”
They obeyed without a second thought.
Melvin was a bloody mess, his face swollen like a rotting pumpkin, teeth knocked loose. His words were slurred, broken by painful groans. “P–Please stop… I’m really… going to die…”
Jenny got hers as well. Two female bodyguards shoved her down, each grabbing an arm.
They yanked her hair until clumps tore free, raining slaps on her until her face was a
swollen, red mess.
Finn, standing beside her, was seized next. I made sure to leave him bruised and battered.
Soon, police cars sped to the scene. Chief Zetterberg from Crestford Police Department walked up to greet me. “Ms. Wolpert.”
I nodded curtly. “I’ve left the perpetrators to you and brought the evidence.”
I turned and pulled a printed asset list from my bag. “My personal property was stolen, and
the confirmed value is exactly 136,807,400 dollars.”
Chief Zetterberg raised his eyebrows. “A theft of over 100 million dollars is considered a
severe economic crime. Under federal law, if confirmed, it carries a minimum ten–year sentence, potentially life imprisonment, or even the death penalty, depending on the
circumstances.”
Melvin’s face went pale at this. He tried desperately to get up, but a bodyguard held his
neck and forced him back down.
“No… No… Willow, I didn’t know it would end up like this! I–I just had a momentary lapse
in judgment! You have so many bags, so I thought taking a few wouldn’t hurt… Aren’t we getting married soon? You can’t let the police arrest me…
He slapped himself repeatedly before turning to Chief Zetterberg. “Officer, I–I didn’t want to steal! Jenny made me do it! She pressured me! If she hadn’t kept demanding Chanel,

Hermès, and those custom designer bags, I would’ve never dared touch Willow’s things…”
Jenny was on the brink of breaking, and with those words, she snapped, “Your bastard!”
Her sweet, gentle façade shattered in an instant. “You’re trying to make me your scapegoat? You bribed me with a bag to sleep with you every time, and now you’re trying to pin the blame on me? What, you think I’m your mother? Here to take the fall for you?”
I flicked my ear dismissively and said to Chief Zetterberg, “Sorry to drag you into something so trivial.”
Chief Zetterberg’s expression remained grim. “There’s no need to apologize, Ms. Wolpert. For amounts this substantial, it automatically falls under Major Crimes.”
He waved briskly. “Take them away!”
Melvin and Jenny were quickly shoved into the police car, while Finn huddled in the corner, shaking uncontrollably.
Ralph turned to me. “Ms. Wolpert, the kid-”
I said flatly, “I don’t know him. Send him to an
orphanage.”
