Chapter 4
Melvin crossed his arms and sneered as he watched me call for backup. “Oh, you’re not calling the police today, but your lackeys? Cut the act. You came here to win me back, didn’t you?
“You’re nothing but Jen’s stand–in. You were so sweet when you slept with me back then. What turned you into such a shrew?”
Before I could respond, a small figure suddenly darted forward. Finn, mimicking something he’d picked up, spat in my face.
“You’re just his cash cow!” He planted his hands on his hips. “Dad already said you can’t
survive without him, that you’re so clingy it makes him sick. And Ms. Jacobson said it’s
pathetic how low a woman like you can sink.
“Face it, what do you have, other than your money? How could you ever stack up to her? A
woman should be cherished and treated like a queen by her man. No one’s on your side here, Willow. Don’t you think that’s pathetic?”
His spit dripped down my cheek as my fists clenched tighter. I had brought this child into
the world.
Melvin and I never got married, and I didn’t even want a child. But he refused to use protection, saying it was uncomfortable, and that was how I ended up pregnant.
He was the one who knelt, begging me to keep the baby. Later, I overheard his slurred
words as he came home drunk, more than once.
“Willow, that bitch, got pregnant to trap me into marriage… I’ll just keep stringing her
along… until she’s dried up and worthless. Then we’ll see…”
I heard every word clearly, but still deceived myself, pretending his drunken ramblings meant nothing. Fate had given me chances long ago, but I had refused to see them until now. It wasn’t too late, though.

The child I had brought into this world had become a blade turned against me. If that was how he was going to behave, then I owed him no kindness either.
I stared at him without blinking. “Say it again.”
Finn showed no fear. He spat in my face again. “You’re a bitch! You’re a total bitch!”
I raised my hand and slapped him, the sharp crack of it echoing through the air. He froze, his arrogant expression lingering as tears started to form in his eyes.
I didn’t stop. My other hand swung, striking him relentlessly until he broke into loud sobs.
“You called me a bitch?” I narrowed my eyes, my words sharp as a blade. “Then remember this–a filthy mouth will get you in trouble.”
Jenny’s face paled as she rushed to shield him. “Willow, I know you’re angry with me, but you can’t hit a child. Look at yourself. How are you any better than a shrew?”
I scoffed and slapped her across the face. “How considerate of you to come closer when you
knew you’d be next.”
Jenny’s cheek instantly flushed, swelling up.
Melvin charged forward, his face twisted with rage. “Willow, haven’t you caused enough trouble? You lay a hand on Finn, and now you have the nerve to touch Jen?”
I shot him a glance, grabbed a handful of dry earth, and tossed it at his face. The cloud of dirt engulfed his head. He staggered back a couple of steps, shouting, “You looking to die?”
Finn cried out through his tears, “Dad! Ms. Jacobson! We’re on the same side! Let’s beat Willow to death together!”
I couldn’t help but laugh so hard that I almost lost my footing.
Just then, several black SUVS sped up and screeched to a halt outside the restaurant.
Ralph Locher was the first to step out, his expression grim, followed by several impeccably dressed bodyguards with blank faces. These were Dad’s most trusted men, who had

Ralph walked up to me. “Ms. Wolpert, my apologies for the delay.”
The bodyguards all greeted me together. “Good day, Ms. Wolpert!”
I gave a soft hum in reply.
“Perfect timing,” I said, lifting my gaze.
“Proceed.”
