Chapter 9
Just as I was about to fall asleep that night, a sudden call from an unknown number snapped
me out of my drowsiness.
The moment I picked up, a woman’s wailing exploded in my ear. “Solene, you heartless brat! You stood by and let someone hurt my daughter–in–law and grandson! Give me back my
grandson!”
The outburst left me completely baffled.
Before I could even ask what was going on, the crying faded, replaced by Lucian’s hoarse voice.
He said Elise had been attacked by someone and had suffered heavy bleeding. She had been
rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
And while she was being wheeled into surgery, she kept calling out my name.
The absurdity of her words made me laugh in disbelief.
Juana insisted I go to the hospital.
I hadn’t wanted to.
But knowing Juana wouldn’t stop until she got her way, I had no choice but to change and head
over.
By the time I arrived, Elise was just being wheeled out of the operating room.
The moment she saw me, tears welled in her eyes and she trembled helplessly.
Juana’s eyes were red with rage. She charged at me, muttering curses, but Lucian silently stepped in front of me to block her.
“She killed your only child, and you’re still protecting her? Have you forgotten everything your brother did for you?” Juana screamed.
“Mom, this has nothing to do with her…” Lucian said.
“No, it’s her! She hates me for taking Lucian away from her, so she wants to hurt me and the baby! Juana, you have to get justice for me!”

Her words made me laugh again–this time from sheer scorn.
And at that moment, I realized the figure I saw earlier that afternoon had been her.
Keeping my expression calm, I asked coolly, “Are you sure what happened to you has anything
to do with me? If you’re certain, I’ll call the police right now.”
Elise’s face twisted with panic at the mention of police. She hesitated and stammered, “After
all, you almost became part of our family. For Lucian’s sake, there’s no need to make a big deal
out of this.”
I let out a cold laugh. “No, I think it’s absolutely necessary. If I don’t call the police, how will I prove my innocence?”
As I spoke, I pulled out my phone and dialed the police right in front of them.
Elise’s expression turned frantic. She struggled to grab my phone.
But I stayed composed and said calmly, “I saw you go into a hotel with a man this afternoon. If
I report this now, I can even help the police to do the investigation. I’m sure the police will get to the bottom of what really happened.”
“No… no, don’t call the police!” she shrieked.
Ignoring her screams, I made the call.
Her face turned ashen at my words.
She had assumed I hadn’t seen her earlier, that she could dump all the blame on me and no one
would question whether she was telling the truth.
But what she didn’t expect was that I had seen her just as she had seen me.
After helping the polices, I was ready to leave.
That’s when the doctor who had performed my abortion walked out of the operating room.
She was surprised to see me and asked, “You just had an surgery. Why haven’t you come for a
follow–up checkup in the past few days?”
“Surgery? What surgery?”

She looked puzzled. “The abortion. You went home the first day after the surgery. I haven’t had a chance to check on her recovery.”
Then she turned to me and added, “Since you’re here, you might as well get checked. As a woman, you need to take better care of yourself.”
Her words drained the color from Lucian and Juana’s faces.
Lucian stared at me, eyes wide in disbelief. His voice trembled. “Our baby… is gone?”
