Chapter 4 

She posted a sonogram pic with Lucian gazing down at the report, captioning: “Hurry up, 

one! Mom and Dad are dying to meet you.” 

Scrolling down, I saw the top comment–it was from Lucian’s mother, Juana. 

She wrote: “Grandma is excited too! I can’t wait to meet my first grandchild!”

Every comment came from someone in the Vale family. 

Judging from their words, they had all known about Lucian marrying Elise. 

I thought back to my recent visit to the Vale family, how kind they had been to me. 

It was more than ridiculous. 

I couldn’t help but wonder–when I brought up the wedding with them, were they all secretly laughing at me? 

My boyfriend had already signed a marriage document with someone else, and I was still looking forward to a sham wedding. 

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and went home. 

Before our wedding date had even been set, the Vale family had already sent over pre–wedding 

gifts. 

As soon as I got home, I packed everything they had given me into cardboard boxes. 

When the day of the wedding arrived, I planned to return every single item they had sent. 

From then on, I would have nothing more to do with the Vale family. 

After the abortion, my body was weak, so I took a few days off to rest at home. 

One day, in a sleepy haze, I sensed someone approaching. 

When I opened my eyes, I saw a familiar face. 

Lucian held my cold hands in his and looked worried. “Solene, are you not feeling well? Let me take you to the hospital, okay?” 

Chapter 4

In the past, I would have thrown myself into his arms and sought comfort in his embrace. 

But now, I pulled my hand away and tucked it back under the blanket. My voice was hoarse. “It’s just a small cold. No need to go to the hospital.” 

Lucian didn’t seem to notice my rejection. He shook his head. “Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? We’re getting married soon–there’s no need to be so distant.” 

The word married snapped me out of my daze. 

Married. Right. He was getting married. 

I glanced at the boxes in the corner and said softly, “You’re right. Since you’re getting married, 

you should take your things with you today.” 

Though we hadn’t lived together, he often stayed over, so some of his personal belongings 

were still here. 

I had already packed them up the day I got back from the hospital. 

Lucian didn’t notice anything odd. He smiled and said, “Sure, we’ll be moving into the new 

place after the wedding anyway.” 

I didn’t respond. 

That night, Lucian made me a warm bowl of creamy mushroom soup, then left with his things. 

As I watched him walked out of the door, I said quietly, “Don’t come again. I don’t want you catching my cold. Just focus on becoming the most handsome groom.” 

He gave a resigned sigh but still nodded and agreed. 

Over the next few days, he didn’t come back, but he continued sending me messages now and 

then like usual. 

I replied half–heartedly each time. 

Time passed quickly, and the wedding day finally arrived. 

I didn’t put on the wedding dress Lucian had designed for me, nor did I walk toward the future I had once dreamed of. 

Chapter 4

Instead, I bought a plane ticket to Iceland. 

Just before boarding, the hotel called to ask when I’d arrive. 

I sent them Elise’s photo and messaged: “This is the real bride. I was only helping her rehearse. Please find her and help her with the makeup and dress.” 

After that, I blocked and deleted every way to contact Lucian. 

Then I removed my SIM card and tucked it into my bag. 

For the first time in a long while, I felt a sense of peace.
