Chapter 7
A few days later, Deke showed up outside my office, clutching a bouquet of fresh flowers.
I didn’t reach for them like I used to. Instead, I kept my voice flat. “What are you doing here?”
He scratched the back of his head, flashing a sheepish smile. “Babe, we’re getting married next month. Can’t I come see you?”
I took a step back, keeping my distance. “No need. I’m busy. Don’t contact me unless it’s important.”
Maybe he picked up on my cold tone because his smile faltered. But he still wouldn’t let up.
“Even if we’re not married yet, we’re still a couple. What’s wrong with me visiting?”
I forced down my disgust and smiled. “Heh. We’re not a couple anymore.”
His expression changed, his grip tightening around the flowers. “Zoey, what do you mean?”
I pulled out my phone, opening my chat with Anita. “You should recognize her.”
His face drained of color. The flowers slipped from his hands, petals scattering on the
pavement.
Just like our relationship–shattered beyond repair.
Desperate, he lunged forward, reaching for my hand. “Babe, let me explain! This is all a misunderstanding! I have nothing to do with Anita anymore. I only love you!”
I stepped back, dodging his touch. “Oh? So she forced you to marry her?”
Deke hung his head, playing the victim. “She said she was pregnant and needed to get married for the baby’s birth registration.”

Wow. That was his excuse?
I scoffed. “Oh, how considerate of you.”
Without hesitation, Deke dropped to his knees and clung to my leg.
“Babe, I’ve come to my senses! I’m divorcing her right now. As soon as it’s finalized, we can register our marriage the very next day!”
Hah. He sure had his timeline mapped out.
I lifted my free leg and kicked him hard in the shoulder.
“Sorry, but I’m not interested in second–hand goods.”

Deke winced, his face twisting as he slumped to the ground, completely defeated.
“Zoey, why can’t you just understand? I only helped her because of our past! I don’t have feelings for her anymore–she’s nothing to me now! Besides, the baby isn’t even mine! You
think I’d still want her?”
He spat out insults about Anita like they were ancient history.
But I could hear it–the hesitation, the reluctance.
Anita was his first love, the one who’d always held that top spot in his heart.
He could keep it. I didn’t want it.
I let out a cold laugh. “Clean up your mess first.”
Deke latched onto the words like a lifeline, nodding eagerly. “Babe, I will. I promise.”
I discreetly stopped the recording on my phone and turned away.
The second I stepped through the office doors, I sent the full recording to Anita.
