Lucas immediately booked the earliest flight abroad when he learned Wendy’s whereabouts.
However, before he could board the plane, his father–face dark with anger–stopped him. Then, he slapped Lucas hard across the face.
“You ungrateful son! How much longer will you make a fool of yourself?
“She’s only an orphan with nothing to her name, and you canceled your engagement with the Coles for her?
“I let you live like the poor and date that girl for two years to teach her a lesson, but that doesn’t mean I will ever allow her into our family!
“My daughter–in–law–whether she’s from the Coles or not–must be of equal status to us!”
Ethan’s head snapped to the side from the force of the slap, a trace of blood appearing at the corner of his lips.
Yet he stubbornly met his father’s gaze.
“I will not marry Natelie. I will not marry anyone else. I only love Wendy!”
His father’s chest heaved with rage. He raised his cane and struck Ethan across the back.
“Ground him!”
No matter how much Ethan struggled, he was no match for the bodyguards.
They hid his gadgets and shut him away, allowing no visitors except those who brought him food.
However, even after two weeks, he refused to give in.

Then, he stopped eating.

By the third day of his hunger strike, his mother could no longer stand it. She yelled at his father to release him.
His father had no choice.
However, when he finally let Ethan out, his face was still cold with disapproval.
“I will allow you to go to England and find that girl, but if she refuses to come back with
you, you will return home and marry someone of our choosing.”
His father’s cane struck the floor as he talked to Lucas.
Lucas immediately agreed.
In his mind, Wendy would return with him if he sincerely apologized to her. After all, she
had loved him for two years and even sold her kidney for him.
The moment he was free, he booked a flight and left.
He had prepared himself for their first meeting.
Maybe Wendy would ignore him.
Maybe she would call him a liar and tell him to get lost.
None of that mattered as long as he could see her.
Once she forgave him, he would propose to her. He would tell the world that she was the only woman he wanted.
However, he never imagined that when he finally saw her again, another man would be by
her side.
They walked together, laughing and talking like old friends.
Wendy did not even notice Lucas following them.

His heart clenched as he took in the familiar figure before him.
The longing for her came crashing down all at once, nearly drowning him.
He could not take it any longer; he finally called out her name.
“Wendy, I’ve finally found you.”
She froze.
She took a step back, putting distance between them.
The movement was harsh to Lucas.
However, he knew–he deserved it.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Wendy said, her voice calm but distant.
“You’re engaged to Natelie, aren’t you?”
“I called off the wedding. I only love you-”
His hand reached out, just like it had so many times before.

However, before he could touch her, the man beside Wendy stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body.
“If you want to talk, start talking,” Ethan said coolly.
Lucas disliked the man from the moment he saw him.
However, he had held back, afraid of making a bad impression on Wendy.
Unfortunately, his patience had run out.
His fists tightened until his knuckles cracked.
“This is between me and my girlfriend. It’s none of your business.”
Wendy immediately corrected him, saying, “We broke up.”
