Chapter 12
“Impossible!”
Lucas never knew she was missing a kidney.
The doctor sighed, still holding the medical report.
“Mr. Shalton, please take a look.”
Lucas snatched the report from him.
His vision blurred as he read the results. His knees nearly buckled.
He could not accept it; he did not know anything about it.
He panicked.
He called his assistant immediately. He wanted to know where Wendy had been for the past
few weeks and what she had done.
When he hung up, he collapsed onto a chair in the waiting area, gripping the medical report tightly.
The entire hospital lobby fell into silence. No one dared to speak.
About 30 minutes later, his phone rang.
He answered instantly with trembling hands.
“Speak,” he ordered.
The voice on the other end hesitated for a moment before finally speaking.
“Mr. Shalton, we found out that Ms. Shaw sold her kidney for 70,000 dollars on the black
market two weeks ago. According to our sources, she did it to pay for someone’s medical
treatment.”

Boom!
Wendy had sold her kidney for him!

She had given him every cent she had saved in college and even traded her kidney for his
so–called cancer treatment fees.
He never felt such regret–regret on agreeing to Natelie’s ridiculous plan two years ago.
Wendy was gone.
Lucas suddenly remembered the invitation he had handed to Wendy last week.
He wondered if she would be there.
Without hesitation, he stormed out of the hospital and headed to the hotel in 15 minutes.
He did not care about anything else.
Not his parents‘ threats to cut him off.
Not the disapproving glares from guests as they left the canceled engagement party.
None of it mattered.
Only Wendy did.
As he rushed into the hotel, a staff member hurried over, holding out a small package.
“Mr. Shalton, this was delivered for you through express delivery.”
Lucas‘ heart pounded.
The invitation was laid on top of the box.
His hands trembled as he took it, a creeping dread curling around his gut.
His mind screamed at him not to open it, not to confirm what he already feared.
Unfortunately, he did.

When he saw what was inside, his last shred of hope shattered.
It was two years‘ worth of gifts–every single thing he had ever given Wendy.
A pile of cheap trinkets–items so worthless he could not even name them.

Sitting right on top was the silver bracelet she had once cherished more than anything.
It was finally discarded–tossed carelessly into the box.
Pain lanced through his chest.
Lucas had never cared about price tags. He had been raised in luxury, surrounded by extravagance. Money was just numbers to him.
Back then, he had purposely bought the cheapest gifts to keep up the illusion that he was
poor.
He had asked the housekeeper where to find the most inexpensive items.
She had told him about an online shopping platform that sold cheap stuff.
Every gift he gave Wendy came from there.
Or from a street vendor, something random and meaningless he had grabbed while walking
past.
Yet, she smiled every single time and treasured them.
Finally, she had thrown them all away as if she had discarded Lucas from her life.
For the first time in his life, Lucas could not imagine what his life without Wendy would be
like.
A small piece of paper fluttered to the floor. He picked it up.
There was something written on the back.
[I wish you happiness. May we never meet again.]

He closed his eyes, and his breath hitched. The invitation slipped from his fingers.
She knew.
She had always known.
All the times she had stopped calling him.
All the little things she had thrown away.
She had realized the truth a long time ago.

Ethan stepped in even closer.
“A real man doesn’t stalk his ex. Walk away with dignity.”
Wendy pointed at the faint scar still visible on her face.
“When I first arrived in England, I was covered in injuries. The worst one was this deep gash on my face.
“If you hadn’t chosen to save Natelie, or if I hadn’t given up everything I had to pay for your fake cancer treatments, this scar would’ve been gone a long time ago.”
Her words punched the anger out of Lucas.
She was right.
All of those would not have happened if he had not started the lie two years ago.
Wendy saw the defeated look in his eyes and hesitated.
She knew Lucas well.
He would never leave her alone if she did not make things clear.
She turned to Ethan and said, “Can you give us a moment?”
Ethan hesitated but eventually nodded.
After ensuring she would be safe, he reluctantly walked away, turning back several times before disappearing down the hall.
Lucas mistook her hesitation for hope.
However, the following words she spoke shattered his hope completely.
“Lucas, I don’t love you anymore.
“Leave,”
