The people around Lucas were confused.
Previously, he had never gotten angry when they mocked Wendy.
“Get out! None of you are allowed to lay a finger on her!”
His outburst was so loud that it carried into the next room, where Natelie was doing her hair and makeup.
She hurried over to see what had happened–only to find Lucas‘ usual group slinking out of the room, their faces pale.
She jogged over and clung to his arm, pouting.
“Today is our big day, Lucas! Don’t be bothered by them.”
Lucas turned to look at Natelie.
She wore a white evening gown, a short veil perched delicately on her head.
It was a scene he had imagined countless times.
He could already picture how stunning she would look in a wedding dress.
However, at that moment, none of that mattered.
“Natelie,” he said slowly.
“Why did
you
make me be Wendy’s boyfriend in the first place? Do you really love me?”
Natelie blinked, confused by his sudden question.
She had only ever seen Lucas as an older brother when they were younger.
However, her family had drilled it into her–they would get married one day.
She was born into wealth and power and had always known that marriages in their world

were arranged.
She had accepted that truth early on.

In high society, real love was optional. As long as a couple looked happy in public, that was
enough.
Lucas was her future husband. He was supposed to handle her problems, fix her unhappiness, and deal with the people she disliked.
As long as they got married, that was all that mattered.
She tilted her head and smiled innocently.
“Does it really matter?”
Lucas took a slow, deep breath and nodded.
Natelie’s brows furrowed as if she did not understand.
“As long as we get married, isn’t that all that matters?”
Her voice was as sweet and naive as always.
However, to Lucas, it was a death sentence.
As a child, he had watched his parents tear each other apart because of his father’s affairs.
The house had been massive, yet always empty.
His mother had sat in silence, while his father’s only presence was the sound of a slamming door as he left–again and again.
Back then, Lucas had promised himself that his marriage would be built on something real.
Something pure.
Something true.

Apparently, Natelie was not the right person.
For the first time in days, Lucas was relieved.
He removed the boutonniere from his jacket and set it aside.
“We’re calling off the engagement,” he said calmly.
