At the hotel where the engagement party was hosted, Lucas sat stiffly in his chair as the stylist worked on his face.
For some reason, he did not feel as excited as he had imagined.
Marrying Natelie had been his dream for years.
She used to see him as nothing more than an older brother—until two years ago, when she came to him crying, saying someone had bullied her.
He was angry. He rushed to stand up for her without hesitation.
However, Natelie did not want simple revenge.
She had wanted that person to experience pain like never before.
Lucas did not understand what she meant at first.
When she carefully explained her revenge plan, he had refused her.
He could not pretend to be someone else’s boyfriend. He only liked Natelie.
However, she had begged and coaxed him, promising that if he played along and made her happy, she would finally agree to marry him.
In the end, he gave in to her demand.
For two years, he had convinced himself that the real goal was to make Natelie his fiancée and then, on that very day, dump Wendy and rip apart her little dream.
That had been his plan.
Yet, at that moment, just two hours before the engagement ceremony, his mind was filled with nothing but images of Wendy.
How Wendy curled beside him in their tiny bed, leaning into him for warmth.

How Wendy sweated in the summer heat as she cooked for him.
Wendy’s eyes lit up when she received a gift, even if it was a cheap one.
How Wendy’s gentle, worried gaze when she thought he was sick.
Memories of Wendy flooded Lucas‘ mind.
The ticking clock on the wall echoed like a time bomb to him.
For the first time, Lucas admitted it—he was scared.
He was terrified that Wendy would walk into the hall and see him as the groom.

Wendy had given him everything.
She had even given him all her hard–earned savings without hesitation, relieved that he was not sick, never once complaining about the money she had lost.
Lucas could not even begin to imagine how much pain she would be in when she learned

His mind was a tangled mess.
Before he could think any further, a group of his friends barged into the room, laughing and congratulating him.
“Lucas, you’re finally free! It was tough, huh?”
“Congrats on dumping that lowly girlfriend and trading up!”
“Two years of suffering, and now you’re finally free!”
Their mocking voices had been a familiar sound over the past two years.
Every time they gathered, the topic was how he had played a poor man while dating Wendy.

They had laughed at her cheap clothes and how pathetic and low–class she was.
However, at that moment, their words grated on his ears like nails on a chalkboard.
No one noticed his expression darkening. The mocking voices got bolder.

“Got bored of fancy women, huh?”

Before the man could finish his sentence, Lucas kicked him hard in the chest.
The guy crashed to the ground, clutching his ribs and coughing violently.
Lucas‘ face was ice–cold, his eyes filled with stormy rage.
“Who the hell allows you to even think about laying a finger on her?”
