Chapter 10
Linda Collins.
The name struck Zach like a bolt of lightning.
The color drained from his face in an instant. He snatched Amber’s phone, checking the deceased’s ID information digit by digit, then staggered away from the screen.
“Honey!” Amber called out helplessly.
“Don’t bother–he’s headed to the morgue,” I helpfully informed her.
“By the way, Linda Collins is Zach’s mother.”
Amber was stunned. The livestream chat went silent for a moment before exploding.
[Holy shit! Epic plot twist! So this guy and his side piece actually–left his own mother to die on the operating table?!]
[No wonder Dr. Harper wouldn’t reveal the deceased’s name earlier! She was trying to give her former mother–in–law some privacy!]
Comments scrolled frantically, filled with shock, insults, and disbelief.
Amber finally snapped out of her daze and hurriedly ended the livestream.
But she couldn’t shut down the online discussions about the incident.
The hashtag #KilledMotherInLawKilledOwnMom immediately started trending.
Zach and Amber’s livestream had become damning evidence they’d handed to everyone
themselves.
A doctor who couldn’t even recognize his own mother on the operating table and who abandoned his post to protect his mistress, indirectly causing his mother’s death.
Could anything be more absurd, more ironic, or more appalling?

All their previous accusations and attacks against me had boomeranged, striking them with devastating force.
The more desperately they tried to argue their innocence and claim they’d “exposed my plot,” the more cold–blooded, stupid, and inhumane they appeared.
The hospital immediately formed a high–level investigation committee, and the police
became involved as well.
Zach and Amber were suspended indefinitely, facing the harshest penalties from both legal and professional authorities.
“Ruined” was too mild a word to describe what had happened to them.
A few days later, just as the hospital released its preliminary findings confirming serious malpractice and referred the case to judicial authorities, Zach found me.
“You fucking knew all along, didn’t you?!” he screamed.
I calmly watched as he hysterically trashed my office.
.
“You deliberately arranged for me to operate on her! You deliberately made me think it was your mother! You deliberately set it up so Amber and I would leave the operating room! You deliberately let my mother die on the table! You BITCH! How could you be so vicious?!”
Honestly, I genuinely believed he was mentally ill at this point–obsessed with his delusions and completely convinced they were real
I laughed bitterly: “Zach, get your facts straight. First, my office surveillance proves your mother requested you as her surgeon and specifically asked me not to tell you beforehand,
worried about your ‘psychological burden.‘ Second, it was your mother who stole my mom’s
insurance card–you’ll need to reimburse those hospital and surgical fees. Third, the surgical records and surveillance footage show you abandoned the operation for forty
minutes! Fourth, as a surgeon who couldn’t even recognize his own mother, how dare you question me?”
“Zach,” I said, articulating each word clearly, “you killed your mother with your own hands. It has nothing to do with me or anyone else.”
“That’s not true!” He struggled to get up but fell back down from exhaustion, glaring at me

with pure hatred.
“If I had known it was her, how could I possibly… how could I possibly have left the operating room! It was all you! You planned this! You fucking psycho wanted to destroy
me!”
“Planned?” I scoffed.
“Zach, regardless of who the patient was, from the moment you chose to leave the operating room to have your ‘intimate session‘ with Amber for forty minutes, you were already finished.”
Seeing the coldness and finality in my eyes, Zach swayed, as if losing all support, and collapsed to the floor with a desperate whimper.
The aftermath unfolded predictably.
The hospital investigation concluded quickly: Zach had abandoned his post at a critical moment for forty minutes, constituting serious medical negligence and bearing direct responsibility for Linda Collins‘ death. Amber, as the assisting nurse, not only failed to prevent this but actively participated, sharing undeniable responsibility.
Both had their licenses revoked and were permanently barred from practicing medicine.
The police investigation proceeded simultaneously. Though they ultimately didn’t charge him with intentional homicide, medical malpractice was unquestionable. Zach was sentenced to seven years in prison–although it wasn’t particularly satisfying, it guaranteed his life would never be smooth sailing again.
As for Amber, though she escaped criminal charges, she lost her job and family, slinking away from the hospital with no one caring where she went.
The day of the court verdict was beautiful. Sunlight filtered through sycamore leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. I took a deep breath, savoring the scent of fresh grass and sunshine in the air.
My phone rang–Mom calling to hurry me home for the pasta she’d just made.
“On my way!” I hung up, my steps light.
