Chapter 9
I cried out in panic: “Nathaniel, don’t touch him! If you kill him, I’ll bite my tongue off and die right here. Even in death, we’ll remain husband and wife!”
Nathaniel seemed to snap completely. He turned the gun toward me, his eyes wild with madness: “Ruby, I’ve been thinking–if I let you die with another man, I might as well die with you myself. Then, we can be together forever. In the next life, a Ruby without memories will fall in love with Nathaniel Grey again.”
I laughed bitterly: “Nathaniel Grey, what exactly are you trying to prove?”
“I loved you for ten years, suffering your torment and humiliation. I lost my dignity, my child. Now that I’ve finally found happiness, you suddenly appear playing the devoted lover? Don’t you find that
ridiculous?”
“Let me tell you–if you harm me or my husband today, I’ll hate you forever. Forget the next life–I never want to see you again, not even in eternity!”
Nathaniel’s pupils dilated with anguish. His face crumpled with grief as he laughed bitterly: “Is that so? But Ruby, I love you so much. I’d rather kill you than watch you spend your life with another
man. It hurts too much.”
He raised the gun toward me again. “You used to follow me everywhere when we were little. I always took you with me wherever I went. Now, let’s go to hell together.”
“Ruby!”
Sebastian screamed in desperation as I closed my eyes in resignation.
If death would end this entanglement with Nathaniel, so be it. At least Sebastian wouldn’t be harmed.
Nathaniel pulled the trigger. Multiple gunshots rang out, but I felt no pain. Instead, something heavy collapsed before me.
When I opened my eyes, Nathaniel lay in a pool of blood. His gun hadn’t been pointed at me–but at
his own chest.
Everyone stood frozen in shock.

I stared at Nathaniel, my lips trembling: “Why?”
Nathaniel smiled weakly: “Thankfully, that Chase guy didn’t arrive too late and stopped me from doing something terrible.”
Only then did I learn that Sebastian had received an anonymous text at work warning him of my danger and telling him to bring help.
“Ruby, I’m sorry. Only after hurting you so deeply did I finally understand my heart.”
“Every day since you left, I’ve thought of nothing but you. I didn’t want you to call me brother–I wanted to hear you call me by my name. When I saw your wedding video, I was jealous enough to kill. I think I became sick. I wanted to steal you back, even if it meant killing you rather than letting you be with someone else.”
“But I couldn’t do that to you. I’d already hurt you too much, how could I take away your happiness? Since I couldn’t control myself, I had to let others stop me. I owed you a life for our child. Now I’ve repaid that debt.”
“Ruby Sterling, from now on, Nathaniel Grey will trouble you no more. Please be happy. In your next life, don’t meet me. I’m sorry. I love you.”
Nathaniel raised his hand, trying to touch my face one last time, but his strength failed him.
He died.
Staring at his body, I remained motionless for a long time. Only when Sebastian pulled me into his
arms did I realize tears were streaming down my face–not for love, but a farewell to my decade of
youth and grandiose unrequited love.
I called Mrs. Grey with the news. After a long silence, she could only manage a sigh.
The police took Nathaniel’s body away. Tomorrow, Chloe would come to handle his funeral
arrangements.
Sebastian wiped away my tears, wrapping my hands in his warm grasp: “Ruby, shall we go home?”
His palms were warm and broad, giving me security and peace.
I gently touched my belly, where new life was growing. I would soon embrace a new identity and begin a fresh chapter.

Yet the love and hatred of the past would eventually be washed away in the river of time.
“Yeah, let’s go home.”
