Chapter 4
Feeling guilty about the situation, I spoke up first: “I’ll get you some tampons.”
But she suddenly grabbed me, her gentle demeanor vanishing as her face turned cruel:
“Cut the act–it’s sickening. How did you know I wasn’t pregnant? Did that old witch tell you everything about me? Don’t think you’re clever–I know that was morning sickness just now. You’re the one who’s pregnant!”
“The old hag thought drugging Nathaniel and getting you pregnant would make him marry you? Pathetic. Nathaniel only has eyes for me. You’re nothing but a pathetic lapdog.”
I frowned: “I’ve decided to leave. What more do you want?”
Vivienne’s finger traced my belly as she smirked:
“You can leave, but not with this child. Who knows if you’ll use it someday to force Nathaniel to
marry you? As it happens, I need your help with something…‘
Suddenly, Vivienne pushed me away and fell to the ground, screaming hysterically.
The door was kicked open as Nathaniel rushed in, shoving me aside:
“Ruby! What are you doing?!”
“Nate, Ruby was so cruel,” Vivienne sobbed. “She was jealous that I’m pregnant with your child and deliberately pushed me. Our baby is gone! The doctor said my body is weak–if I miscarry, I’ll never be able to have children again!”
So this was what Vivienne meant by “help“-blaming me for her inability to conceive after multiple
abortions.
Looking at the blood on the floor, Nathaniel slapped me hard:
“Ruby, you’re even more vicious and disgusting than I thought!”
He had his bodyguards bring a fruit knife and coldly declared:
“This child lived in Vivienne’s womb for forty days. You’ll receive forty cuts. For every drop of blood

Vivienne shed, you’ll pay double!”
The scene from my previous life flashed before me. Thinking of my unborn child, maternal instinct
made me desperately clutch his leg:
“Brother, I didn’t do it! Believe me!”
“I’m pregnant too! I have a blood clotting disorder–if I lose too much blood, the baby will die! I’ll disappear from your life completely–never bother you and Vivienne again. Please!”
Nathaniel seemed startled by my revelation, hesitating briefly. Seeing his uncertainty, Vivienne immediately wailed:
“Nate, the doctor examined everyone tlfat day, and Ruby wasn’t pregnant at all! She’s just afraid of pain! Our poor baby is nothing but blood now, and I’ll never be a mother again…”
Nathaniel kicked me hard in the belly:
“Ruby, even now you’re still lying? What pregnancy? What blood clotting disorder? All bullshit you made up! If you were really pregnant, why didn’t you say something earlier? Wasn’t marrying me your lifelong dream?!”
“Now you’re suddenly scared of pain? Where was that fear when you pushed Vivienne? Actions have consequences. Cut her! Forty cuts–not one less!”
A searing pain shot through my abdomen as sharp blades repeatedly sliced my skin. The metallic scent of blood filled the bathroom as I curled into myself, overwhelmed by agony.
Watching my blood stain the entire bathroom floor, Nathaniel seemed to soften slightly. He moved
to help me up, but Vivienne whimpered:
“Nate, my belly hurts so bad. Can you take me to the hospital?”
At her words, Nathaniel froze, looking down at me contemptuously:
“Our wedding is in two days. The dress belongs to Vivienne now–consider it your apology to her. If
you ever hurt her again, I won’t let you off so easily.”
As I watched them leave, tears streamed down my face.
Never again, Nathaniel Grey.

The store clerk rushed me to the hospital where, after emergency treatment, I survived, but lost my baby.
Until the day I left, Nathaniel never contacted me. He was too busy planning his wedding with Vivienne and buying her expensive jewelry.
After saying goodbye to Mrs. Grey, I resolutely headed for the airport.
