Jessica stood stunned, tears streaming down her cheeks as she looked at Ryan with hurt in
her eyes.
“You hit me? After using me to climb the ladder, now that you don’t need me anymore, you dare hit me?”
“My uncle retired so no one can keep you in check, and now you think you can yell at me?”
Ryan covered her mouth, nodded awkwardly to Alexander, and dragged the struggling Jessica away.
The welcome party was in shambles after Jessica’s outburst.
Alexander had been silently observing the entire scene. After they left, he made an excuse
and led me out of the hotel.
In the car, Alexander questioned me again about my past.
“Care to explain what you meant by ‘settling a score‘? Are you trying to win back your ex or
just make the other woman’s life miserable?”
Clearly, the perceptive Alexander had figured out the basic dynamics between the three of
- us.
I shook my head and fell into painful memories, telling him the whole sordid story.
I thought I was past crying about it, but by the end, tears were streaming down my face. “I never wanted him back. I just wanted justice for what they did to me.”
Alexander remained silent for a long time before finally asking, “So you don’t know if it was Ryan or Jessica who sent those men after you?”
“I don’t know for sure. All the evidence was destroyed. But I’m certain one or both of them were behind it.”
“Don’t worry,” said Alexander, his typically reserved voice carrying an unusual note of comfort, “I’ll help you.”

The next morning, Alexander had HR notify Jessica she was to take medical leave due to her “unstable mental condition.” He also issued Ryan a formal warning.
With these moves, Ryan’s chances for promotion became virtually non–existent.
Everyone could sense his fall from grace.
Jessica’s uncle, Director Pierce, suddenly proposed hosting a welcome dinner for Alexander, who declined citing his busy schedule. The following day, Alexander requested all personnel files and project materials that had passed through Pierce’s hands over the years.
Rumors spread quickly that headquarters had sent Alexander and me specifically to investigate the branch’s financial irregularities.
Panic rippled through the company.
Ryan cornered me after work, desperately pleading, “Mia, you’re close with Mr. Hayes. Put in a good word for me. I swear I have nothing to do with Director Pierce.”

Ryan stammered before finally promising, “Mia, I’ll cut all ties with the Pierce family immediately! We’ll never associate again!“/
I said nothing, just gave him a knowing smile.
To my surprise, the very next day, news broke that Ryan and Jessica were divorcing.
Not only did Ryan get divorced from Jessica, but he even provided Alexander with evidence of Director Pierce’s kickback schemes with contractors.
Alexander followed the trail and quickly uncovered proof of financial fraud during Pierce’s
tenure.
Soon after, investigators from headquarters took Director Pierce away.
That afternoon, Jessica stormed into the office with a group of friends, creating a scene as she screamed at Ryan, calling him an ungrateful bastard.

She also reported various workplace issues involving Ryan to Alexander.
As a result, Ryan was stripped of his management position due to performance issues and improper promotion practices. That same day, he was moved out of his private office and back to a cubicle.
In his desperation, Ryan turned to me as his last hope.
He invited me to a romantic restaurant where he publicly proposed with roses.
“Mia, I was wrong to abandon you, but I had no choice. Now I’ve divorced Jessica. Will you marry me?”
