Chapter 5
The moment the meeting ended, Ryan cornered me in the break room.
“What are you playing at, Mia? With all the jobs out there, why would you come to my
company?”
I met his suspicious look with a cryptic smile. “Why do you think?”
Ryan studied me for a few seconds before breaking into a smile of his own.
“You couldn’t get over me, could you? Your family lives nowhere near Berkeley. Why else
would you come here if not for me?”
His delusional confidence made me laugh out loud. I grabbed my coffee and tried to leave.
Ryan caught my arm, pushing me against the wall. “Mia, you know what? I’ve missed you too, all these years.”
“I never really liked Jessica. She’s temperamental and stupid. If her uncle hadn’t been a
director, I would never have been with her.”
“But it’s all good now. I’ve made it to management. We can start over.”
He leaned in to kiss me.
I shoved him away. “Back off, Ryan, Have some respect!”
Just then, Alexander’s voice came from the doorway. “Ms. James, could you bring me a coffee?”
Grateful for the interruption, I slipped away from Ryan’s grasp.
In Alexander’s office, he stared at the coffee I’d brought him, his expression unreadable. “You and Ryan Wells… you have history?”
I remained silent, unsure how to respond.
Alexander pressed further. “So you rejected… others because of him?”

His gaze was intense, determined to get to the truth.
I sighed softly. “Something like that. But I promise it won’t affect my work.”
The truth was, Ryan had hurt me so deeply that I was afraid to open my heart to anyone.
Alexander looked away, his voice tinged with displeasure. “If I heard correctly, he’s
married.”
I recognized his misunderstanding but didn’t bother to correct it.
Instead, I simply suggested, “Mr. Hayes, the Berkeley branch has been stagnating for years
with frequent problems. Perhaps you should start your investigation with Ryan Wells.”
Alexander looked at me with surprise. “Turning against your own?”
I smiled and shook my head. “More like settling a score.”
His analytical gaze lingered on me, but somehow with less coldness than before.
That evening, the company hosted a welcome party.
Alexander and I were surrounded by colleagues when a commotion erupted at the entrance.
Jessica had barged in, ignoring staff attempts to stop her.
The event was for management level and above. As a temp worker, Jessica hadn’t been
invited.
Yet there she was, storming in, looking furious.
In just three years, her once carefree face had aged considerably.
Jessica marched toward us with Ryan rushing to intercept her.
But she had already spotted me, her eyes filling with hatred.
She pushed Ryan aside and raised her hand to slap me.
“Mia James! It really is you, you shameless bitch!”

“Wasn’t the lesson from three years ago harsh enough? You dare come back to seduce Ryan again?!” Jessica yelled out.
Ryan quickly grabbed her, hissing, “Jessica! Stop it! Do you realize where we are?”
This only enraged her more. She pointed at me, screaming, “Ryan, are you protecting her? Do you still have feelings for her?”
“Don’t forget who got you where you are today!”
Although most colleagues knew about Ryan’s connection–based promotions, it had never been openly discussed.
As Jessica’s words hung in the air, coworkers exchanged glances, clearly enjoying the
drama.
Ryan couldn’t stand the humiliation. He slapped Jessica across the face. “Shut up!”
