Chapter 3
Jessica smirked. “Is that the best excuse you could come up with? Ryan and I have been
together all night. Who would call you? Couldn’t you think of something more believable?”
The crowd’s judgment grew louder.
Then, the supposedly “blackout drunk” Ryan suddenly sat up straight.
“I’m not drunk at all. I was just resting my head for a minute.”
He stood up and walked over to Jessica, completely steady on his feet. “Mia, we’re broken up. Stop following me around!”
“Have you no self–respect? I love Jessica now, how many times do I need to say it? Move on
with your life!”
“Stop haunting me like this!”
(
His eyes were clear, his speech perfect not a trace of intoxication.
The crowd’s whispers grew into open criticism: “What’s wrong with this girl? She’s pretty
enough, why is she so obsessed with her ex?”
“Having an ex–girlfriend like that must be a nightmare!”
I tried calling the mystery number again. Still powered off.
“Got anything else to say, Mia?” Ryan looked at me with contempt.
“First you tried to ruin my relationship with fake screenshots, and now you’re stalking me to bars, waiting for me to get drunk so you can make a move? Have some dignity!”
Looking at Jessica’s triumphant face and Ryan holding her close, I realized I’d walked right into their trap.
I turned to leave without another word.
But Jessica’s friends blocked my path.

Jessica approached me with a drink in hand. “Mia, we both loved the same man, so we have that connection. Drink this, and we’ll call a truce. You go your way, I’ll go mine, and we’ll never bother each other again.”
“And if I don’t drink it?” I challenged.
“Then you’ll have to stay and entertain us for a while longer.”
Jessica and her friends exchanged sinister smiles.
I looked at Jessica and then at Ryan, who couldn’t quite meet my eyes. Without a word, I took the glass and downed it.
Just a short distance from the club, the world began to spin.
Suddenly, several men I’d never seen before blocked my path.
“Hey pretty girl, you’ve pissed off the wrong people! Someone wants us to teach you a lesson!”
“They told us to tell you Berkeley isn’t your place. Don’t ever come back!”
I tried to grab my phone to call for help, but one of them snatched it and threw it far away.
They dragged me into a dark alley…
As consciousness slipped away and searing pain tore through me, I nearly thought I was going to die. In my final moment of desperation, a police officer appeared.
With every ounce of strength left, I told him what happened. But when police reached the club, everyone was gone.
All the security cameras in the area were conveniently “broken.”
No one could prove I’d been attacked.
And the phone that hit me up to come in was already deactivated…
