Chapter 1
My boyfriend of four years finally landed his dream job at Google. Shortly after, he publicly announced his relationship with a new colleague.
I ran to confront him in anguish, but he only said to me, “Jessica is my manager’s niece. She can help advance my career in ways you never could, I’m destined for success in the near future. We’re just not on the same level anymore.”
“Don’t be so selfish. If you really love me, you’ll walk away. Stop clinging to something
that’s over.”
Heartbroken, I moved on. Three years later, I found someone who truly valued me, and we got married.
However, on our wedding day, I spotted a familiar face in the crowd staring at me in complete shock – my ex–boyfriend.
That’s when I learned the truth: my husband was actually my ex’s direct boss.
My boyfriend and I were each other’s first loves, together for four years.
Everyone said we were the perfect match – he was smart and ambitious, I was the
supportive girlfriend who believed in our future.
For him, I gave up my early admission to Stanford University, following him back to his hometown in Berkeley County to help him prepare for Google interviews.
While Ryan aced his interview, I got rejected because my major wasn’t what they were looking for.
Everyone called me stupid for sacrificing my future, but I didn’t care. I was too busy dreaming about the simple, happy life Ryan had promised we’d build together. I planned to try again in the fall recruitment cycle.
Then one day, a friend sent me screenshots from Instagram. My heart suddenly stopped.

Ryan had just gone “official” with another girl. Not just that there were photos of them
traveling together, looking blissfully happy. Photos that dated back weeks, maybe months. He’d been blocking me from seeing his posts all this time.
The same guy who’d been whispering sweet nothings in my car last night was now publicly declaring his love for someone else.
I sat frozen for an entire day, replaying every sweet moment we’d shared over the years. When he came home from work, I finally asked him why.
At first, Ryan played dumb. When I showed him the screenshots, he dropped the act.
“Look, Mia, people move up in life. I work at Google now a company thousands would kill to get into. My new girlfriend Jessica and I… we just make more sense together.”
New girlfriend… the words were like a knife in my heart.
Fighting back tears, I tried to reason with him. “But I checked with HR. There’s a fall recruitment for my major. I could-”
“You could what?” Ryan cut me off impatiently. “Let’s be real. You don’t have what it takes to pass that interview. And even if you somehow got into Google, you think you’d be in
Jessica’s league?”
He leaned forward, his voice cold. “Jessica is my boss’s niece. Her family owns factories. Being with her means I can skip decades of grinding. Wake up, Mia. Hard work means nothing compared to family connections. She’s in a different social class from you. And
now, so am I.”
I nodded, pretending to understand, but inside I was laughing bitterly.
This was the same man who had painted beautiful pictures of our future together to convince me to give up my own path.
Now he looked down on me, belittled me, all for his own advancement.
I hated myself for not seeing it sooner.
When my face showed my devastation, something flickered in Ryan’s eyes.

He reached for my hand.
“Mia, don’t look like that. This doesn’t have to change everything! I’ll marry her, but we can still be together. I can give you money. You won’t even have to work if you don’t want to!”
My blood turned to ice.
Four years of what I thought was love, reduced to this disgusting proposal in seconds.
The relationship I had treasured as sacred was something he was willing to turn into an affair. In his eyes, I was the kind of woman who would accept such an arrangement.
I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face.
“It’s over, Ryan. We’re done.”
Ryan seemed stunned by the slap. When he finally snapped out of it, he glared at me with pure hatred.
“Fine! This is what you want! Don’t come crawling back when I’m a wealthy executive and
you’re still nothing!”
That night, I slipped off the promise ring he’d given me and packed my things. I booked a flight for the next day and left his apartment for good.
When my friends heard what happened, they were furious on my behalf. Some called Jessica a homewrecker, while others felt she might be an innocent victim who had no idea
about me..
I kept thinking about what Ryan had said and the carefree smile in Jessica’s photos. No woman deserves to be with a man who only values her for her family’s money and
connections.
It wasn’t fair to her.
After much consideration, I sent Jessica a private message explaining everything.
But I never thought that she stabbed me in the back real quick.
