Chapter 44
“Give me the photo!” Zvonimirommanded fiercely.
Rishima gently shook her head, stubbornly saying, “First, tell me who she is.”
“None of your business!” Zvonimir’s tone was impatient as he reached out to grab the photo.
But tonight, after being stabbed by Rishima and expelling the aphrodisiac from his body, even a strong Alpha like him couldn’t overpower her at this moment.
Rishima took a step back, clutching the photo tightly, and smiled, “Zvonimir, if you dare take another step, I’ll tear it apart.
“You wouldn’t dare!” Zvonimir was so agitated that the veins on his neck bulged.
“You can try and see if I wouldn’t.” Seeing his reaction, Rishima felt a pang of bitterness. Her eyes turned red, and tears threatened to spill.
“Dam it!” Zvonimir cursed angrily. “Haven’t you caused enough chaps? We’ve already severed our mate bond, so why are you still interfering in my personal affairs?”

“Feeling guilty, are you?” Rishima sneered. “You think I’m a fool, don’t you? For four years! For four years, you turned me into a replacement for another she–wolf! And now, I can’t even get an answer? Zvonimir, if you have the guts to do it, then have the guts to admit it. Don’t make me despise you.”
Infuriated, Zvonimir gritted his teeth and said, “Fine! If you insist on humiliating yourself, I’ll tell you the truth. Yes, you guessed right. Shirley is the she–wolf I love most, the one most deserving of my love! She’s the only one I’ll ever love. And you, Rishima-*
Zvonimir suddenly curled his lips into a mocking smile. Staring at Rishima’s pale face, he enunciated every word: “You’re nothing more than a substitute for her!”
Smack!
Each of Zvonimir’s words felt like a dagger stabbing into Rishima’s heart, leaving her in so much pain she couldn’t speak. Her entire body froze.
It turned out that being a substitute for someone else was far worse than not receiving love from her Alpha.
When she severed her mate bond with Zvonimir, Rishima had resented him for his infidelity. Many nights, she lay awake, haunted by memories of their time together.
Later, she consoled herself, thinking that since they had once been mates, at least Zvonimir had loved her sincerely when he courted her. Even if he no longer loved her, it was simply because time had eroded their feelings.
But now, she realized that the sweet words he had once said to her were meant for another she–wolf. The love Zvonimir had displayed wasn’t for her–it was for Shirley.
It was late at night. In the quiet hospital corridor, only Rishima and Zvonimir remained. The atmosphere was eerily still, and the overhead lights cast a pale glow on Rishima’s face, making her look even paler than Zvonimir. Her lips trembled uncontrollably.
Time seemed to streten into eternity, yet it also felt like only a few seconds had passed. Finally, Rishima choked out, “What about Farah?
In truth, she wanted to ask if his words were true–had he truly treated her as a replacement for the past four years?

But she suddenly realized how ridiculous that question was.
How could a substitute like he hope to be loved? Even saying it out oud felt laughable.
Zvonimir sat down on a chair in the hospital corridor. Hearing her question, he replied casually, “Farah is obedient and sensible. My grandfather is very fond of her.”
The implication of his words was clear: he didn’t love Farah. He had accepted her as his mate only because she fit Grandpa Ashcroft’s standards for the luna of the Silverfang pack.
“Then why did you have an affair with her?” Rishima blurted out.
Zvonimir snapped impatiently, “I didn’t have an affair. Believe it or not!”
Zvonimir didn’t enjoy mating with a weak she–wolf like Farah. What he wanted was a fiery and alluring she–wolf like Rishima.
“Now I believe you. Rishima smiled bitterly.
How foolish she had been! She had been Zvonimir’s mate for nearly four years, yet she had not only been treated as a replacement but had also been ignorant of who he truly loved. She had been so bind that she thought Zvonimir’s love for Farah was the reason he despised her.
It turned out that all along, he had only ever loved Shirley.
