Chapter 40
Grandpa Ashcroft called Zvonimir to his study on the second floor.
He asked a few questions about the pack. Seeing Zvonimir’s composed and decisive responses, he nodded in approval. “I feel reassured leaving the pack in your hands. But…”
At this point, Grandpa Ashcroft paused, his aged face showing a hint of anger. The butler entered, carrying a tray of coffee for him.
Zvonimir said nothing, quietly waiting for Old Master Ashcroft to continue.
After a long moment, Grandpa Ashcroft sighed deeply. “But your uncles are all useless wolves. I entrusted them with several projects, yet within a few months, problems arose in every single one of them. Tomorrow, I want you to go to State A and help them
resolve the issues.”
Zvonimir frowned, not immediately agreeing to his grandfather’s request. He thought to himself that if he went to State A now, what would happen if Rishima, left alone in the empire, sought out her lover?
Besides, the projects of the Silverfang pack in the Federation had always been managed by his grandfather. Zvonimir was not particularly interested in these matters.
Grandpa Ashcroft, noticing his discontent, added, ‘You don’t need to spare their feelings or handle their mistakes lightly. Do as you see fit. Hmph, your uncles are truly useless if they require a nephew like you to clean up their mess. I feel ashamed on their behalf!‘
“Yes, I’ll take care of it.” Since his grandfather had asked, Zvonimir could only comply.
Looking at his only grandson, the old man instructed, “You must ensure Farah conceives soon.”
“I understand,” Zvonimir replied.
Grandpa Ashcroft stared at him intently. “I heard you were enchanted by Rishima’s scent during her breeding cycle, is that true?”
“It was an accident,” Zvonimir replied casually.
Grandpa Ashcroft snorted coldly. “I won’t dwell on your past indiscretions, but you must control your emotions. You are the Alpha of the Silverfang pack. Your primary responsibility now is to produce the next Alpha for the pack. Do you understand?!”
Grandpa Ashcroft was referring to Rishima’s inability to conceive.
Zvonimir said, “I know what I must do.”
“Good.” Grandpa Ashcroft leaned on his cane, slowly walking toward the window.
“You insisted on making her your mate. Even though I didn’t like her, I agreed, thinking she genuinely loved you and could bear a strong wolf pup for the Silverfang pack. Who would have thought she couldn’t even conceive? I once suggested having another she- wolf bear the child and letting her raise it, but she refused. Farah is different. Farah is a well–behaved she–wolf who will take good care of you. You can play around with Rishima, but know when to stop. Don’t follow in your father’s footsteps and disrupt everyone’s peace. Otherwise, I’ll break your legs.”
Perhaps due to his old age, Grandpa Ashcroft rambled on. Zvonimir stened quietly, but his grandfather’s words did not weigh heavily on his heart,
When Grandpa Ashcroft grew tired, Zvonimir finally spoke. “Grandfather, I know what I need to do. Rest assured.”
Hearing this, Grandpa Ashcroft waved him away.
Chapter 40
As Zvonimir left the study, he encountered Richard and Farah in the hallway.
Seeing Farah tightly clutching something in her hand, Zvonimir raised an eyebrow and smiled. What are you holding?
Painkillers, Farah said as she stepped forward, linking arms with him. Her delicate face revealed a hint of reproach. “Zvonimir, you don’t care about me at all.”
“Why would you say that?”
“Because you didn’t even ask why I needed painkillers from Dr. Richard.” Farah pouted. And for the past two nights, you haven’t come home, always saying you had to work late. Is it because you only care about work and not me?‘
You’re overthinking, Zvonimir gently reassured her. ‘You’re my future mate. How could I not care about you?‘
Farah blushed and leaned into Zvonimir’s chest. “Zvonimir, you’re so bad. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.”
- Zvonimir chuckled, wrapping his arm around her waist. Seeing Richard still standing in front of him, he frowned. My grandfather is in the study. Go check on him,
Richard cast a fleeting glance at Farah before smiling and replying, Yes, I’ll go now.“”
Darkness fell, and the Silverfang mansion sank into tranquility.
Farah was still awake; she knocked on Zvonimir’s bedroom door.
The door opened, and she immediately embraced Zvonimir with a sweet smile. “Zvonimir, I made you a cup of coffee. You’ve been working so hard lately; have some to relax. It might help you sleep better too.”
Zvonimir smiled appreciatively at her. “You’re truly a wonderful mate. I’m so fortunate to have you by my side.”
