Chapter 3
I decided to get the hell out of New Jersey.
With the mansion keys still in my pocket, I made one last trip to Luca’s territory.
No makeup, just jeans and sneakers.
Walking in, most of his crew didn’t even recognize me.
When I pulled off my cap, all those guys who used to call me “boss lady” went dead silent.
They clearly knew about Luca’s new piece. One of the younger guys who’d always been loyal to me tried to lighten things up.
“Miss Adora, between us… you and the boss are the real deal.”
“What’s he thinking, parading around some college chick? Makes him look like a fucking joke.”
“Maybe if you talked to him–you know the boss always listens when you—”
I gave a bitter laugh.
Ten years with Luca Russo.
I had that innocent face that turned smoking hot with the right lipstick and eyeliner.
Plenty of men watched me behind my back, but Luca was always my shield.
Anyone who touched a hair on my head ended up in Kansas breaking rocks with a sledgehammer.
One tear from me, and Luca would drop a million–dollar deal just to make me smile.
That was my privilege, once upon a time.
But now, the guys couldn’t even finish their sentence.
A ceramic mug flew across the room, smashing against the wall inches from their heads.
Luca’s face was thunderous.

“Didn’t realize this was Adora’s fucking territory now,” he snarled.
“This is how you assholes run my business when I’m not around?!”
The entire place went silent as a grave.
That’s Luca’s power.
Except now, that power was being used against me.
I tried to explain, but the girl behind him peeked out, all wide–eyed innocence.
“Luca, is this the Adora you told me about?” she asked, voice dripping honey.
“She dresses just like me!”
Luca rubbed his temple, looking me up and down.
Jeans and sneakers–exactly like Grace’s outfit.
His eyes narrowed.
“Adora, have you been stalking Grace?”
Looking closer, Grace was a discount version of 18–year–old me.
Especially in those jeans and sneakers–a cheap knockoff of how I used to look.
I saw through her little game immediately.
But I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.
Instead of accusing me of stalking her, shouldn’t someone ask if she’d researched Luca’s type?
After ten years, Luca couldn’t even trust me this much…
I pressed my lips together stubbornly.
Luca snorted, his tone dripping contempt.
“Dressing like her won’t make you 18 again.”

“What the fuck are you trying to prove here, Adora?”
I blinked, shocked by what had just come out of his mouth.
“Tell you what,” Luca licked his lips, merciless. “Ten years. Name your price.”
I froze.
Ten years at Luca’s side.
I’d taken bullets for him, knife wounds for him.
But nothing–absolutely nothing–had ever hurt like this.
My nails dug into my palms as my voice shook.
“What the fuck did you just say?!”
“I said, I wasted ten years of your life.”
“Name your fucking price.”
Luca stood with his hands in his pockets.
Even with emotion raging behind those eyes, he forced the words through clenched teeth.
After hearing him out, I could barely stand.
Grace tugged at his sleeve, playing peacemaker.
“Luca, baby, don’t be so harsh.”
“Adora hasn’t done anything wrong.”
Luca bent down, gently nuzzled her nose with his.
“Be a good girl and stay out of this.”
He pushed her behind him. “I won’t let anyone mess with you.”
He used to protect me exactly like that.

I couldn’t watch anymore, acid churning in my stomach.
Looking down, I noticed the silver bracelet on my wrist.
When Luca first gave me that bracelet, it was tight around my wrist.
But the deeper I fell in love with him, the looser it became.
