Chapter 13

I sat outside the operating room, still in my wedding gown. The lace, once pristine, felt suffocating against my skin. My hands trembled as I gripped the fabric, my wedding veil crumpled beside me

Inside, behind those cold metal doors, my mother was fighting for her life

I didn’t stop crying. I didn’t know what to do. This shouldn’t be happening. I just knew her for a short period of time. She was my only family and I couldn’t afford losing her

Doctors and nurses rushed in and out, their faces unreadable. No one would tell me anything yet. They didn’t allow me inside. I could only wait but I could barely breathe

This was supposed to be my wedding day

Instead, I was sitting in a hospital, waiting to hear if my mother would survive

Ssh, calm down,Wallace caressed my back and hugged me. Everything will be alright. Your mother will be okay.”

I don’t know what to do,I muttered. She can’t leave me.”

She won’t. I’m here with you,” he said as he kissed my forehead

The police arrived not long after. A sternfaced officer approached, holding a notepad. Miss Lindsey, we’ve reviewed the case. It appears to be an accident.”

I looked up sharply. An accident?”

He nodded. A truck lost its brakes and crashed into your mother’s car.”

My chest tightened. No. This wasn’t an accident. It couldn’t be. I won’t believe thatI won’t believe we were just unlucky

Something felt off

It was Suzanne,I said, my voice firm despite my shaking hands. She’s behind this. I am sure of it! She escaped from jail in order to do this!”

I was scared of my life when she escaped, not realizing that if she couldn’t target me, then she was sure as go for my loved ones

The officer hesitated. Miss Lindsey, we can’t accuse someone without evidence.”

Then find the evidence!I snapped, standing up. Find her! She is behind this!”

The officer sighed. There were no CCTV cameras at the scene. The truck driver didn’t survive, so we can’t confirm if he was paid to do it. At this point, we don’t have anything to suggest foul play.”

I clenched my fists. They wanted to close the case. Just like that

Wallace, who had been quiet beside me, finally spoke. His voice was calm but cold. Thank you for the update, officer. You may go now.”

The police nodded and walked away

I turned to him, eyes burning. They’re just going to let this go?”

Wallace met my gaze. No. But we’ll handle this our way.”

I knew what he meant. The police wouldn’t help us. But Wallace’s men? His resources? They would find out the truth. How could I forget about it? I have my men, too! If I have to pull all our resources, 1 would do, for my mother

I exhaled, my body shaking. We can’t let this go. I was sure of it. She needs to pay!”

Wallace reached for my hand, his grip steady. We won’t. I promise you!He nodded, then callec all his men to investigate

While we waited for updates, the media storm began

The wedding that should have been the event of the year was now a headline for all the wrong

reasons

Wallace was furious when he saw the coverage

This is what they care about?he muttered, scrolling through the articles. But instead of ignoring it, we used it. We fed the speculation, subtly pinning Suzanne as a suspect in the public

eye

Soon, our PR team released a statement

A substantial monetary reward will be given to anyone who can provide credible information on

Suzanne Chavez’s whereabouts

By tomorrow morning, everyone would be hunting for her. She wouldn’t be able to hide forever There is no way I’ll let her go. She picked the wrong girl now

Hours passed. The waiting was unbearable. Then, finally, the doors opened

A doctor stepped out, his face unreadable

I shot up from my seat. How is she?”

He exhaled. She’s stable.”

A weight lifted from my chest

But,the doctor continued, she’s in a coma.”

The world tilted. I staggered back, my breath catching

A coma. Not dead, but not awake. Unmoving. Unconscious. Oh, god. My mother didn’t deserve

this

Tears filled my eyes. Will she wake up?”

The doctor hesitated. We’ll have to wait and see.”
