I sat alone in the bedroom for what felt like forever, trying and failing to calm myself down.
I think I’m falling for Ryan–and that’s exactly why he messes with my head like this.
Those photos, Summer’s snide little remarks, and all the weird stuff I’ve been noticing lately kept looping in my mind like a bad dream.
But honestly, what hurts the most isn’t the pictures she sent. It’s Ryan’s silence.
I can feel it. He’s hiding something. Something big.
And the more he tries to act like everything’s fine, the more I can’t help but question everything. Why can’t he just be honest with me?
What Summer said struck with me.
She was right. That café we met at the other day? Super low–key. So how the hell did Ryan even know I was there?
A chill crept down my spine. ‘Was I–being watched?‘
Out of nowhere, this awful thought hit me–like I’ve been living in a perfect little cage, and Ryan–he’s the one who locked the door.
He’s keeping secrets, and I don’t want to be left in the dark anymore.

A knock on the door broke the silence. Nina again. She was probably here to remind me to eat.
I rubbed my temples and let out a slow breath. Thinking about the baby growing inside me, I forced myself to pull it together and got up to open the door.
When I did, Nina’s face lit up with relief. She spoke gently, “Ma’am, if you don’t eat soon, the baby’s gonna start kicking a fuss.”
I gave her a small nod and followed her to the dining room.
The table was set with some of my favorite dishes, and a tall glass of freshly squeezed juice at the center. Nina kept chatting, saying she had asked the chef to make everything light and easy on the stomach–hoping I’d like it.
But the food tasted like cardboard.
Nina stood off to the side, glancing at me now and then, clearly worried. After a moment, she hesitated, then asked softly, “Ma’am–did something happen with Mr. Hudson?”
I looked up and forced a weak smile, “Not exactly a fight. It’s just–there are some things I can’t quite figure out.”
She nodded, like she sorta understand, then gently poured me some juice and said in a low voice, “Ma’am, Mr. Hudson really loves you. We all see it. He’s never treated anyone the way he treats you. The other maids are honestly jealous–you’ve got his whole heart.”

My fingers tightened around the spoon.
Yes, he’s the perfect husband–gentle, caring, always so thoughtful.
But–what if all of that love–is just a lie?

I don’t want to spend the rest of my life like this–confused and blind, just some pretty little bird trapped in a gilded cage.
I swallowed the bitterness rising in my chest and looked down, trying to keep eating, but my stomach twisted even more.
That’s when I heard those footsteps–familiar, steady.
I didn’t need to look. I knew it was him.
Ryan walked over and pulled out the chair beside me.
I glanced up.
He had changed clothes. He looked pale, exhausted–like he was holding something back.
“You went out?” I asked, keeping my voice casual.
He nodded, “Yeah, I had to stop by the firm. Something came up.”
“Mm,” I murmured. Just went back to eating.
The air between us was so heavy you could’ve cut it with knife.
I could feel his eyes on me the whole time, like he wanted to talk but couldn’t find the words.
My chest tightened.
Finally, he spoke in a low, hoarse voice.
“Gabby–I’m sorry.”
