The name sounded familiar, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t
recall who he was.
Strangely, just thinking about that name made my chest ache–like
something deep inside me was being forcefully pulled, leaving behind
a dull, lingering pain.
I looked up at Ryan, hesitation creeping into my voice, “Vincent
Hudson–who is he?”
Silence.
A heavy, suffocating silence.
Ryan studied me, his dark eyes unreadable, like he was searching for
something confirming something.
Then, after a moment, the corners of his lips curled into a faint,
enigmatic smile. His voice was low and gentle, “It doesn’t matter. He’s
no one important. It’s fine if you don’t remember.”
He sounded almost relieved.
But why did that feel–wrong?
A nagging feeling gnawed at the edges of my mind, telling me I had
forgotten something important–something that should never have

Yet, no matter how hard I tried, my memories remained locked behind
a thick, impenetrable fog. The more I forced myself to remember, the
worse the pain became.
Ryan must’ve noticed my struggle because his voice softened,
carrying the weight of quiet reassurance, “You need to focus on
getting better. Don’t overthink it.”
I fell silent, trying to sort through the chaos in my mind. Then, after a b
rief pause, I asked, “Where’s my phone?”
Ryan’s gaze lowered slightly, his voice steady, “It was lost when you
fell into the ocean. We couldn’t recover it. Once you’re feeling better,
I’ll get you a new one.”
I nodded, a small pang of disappointment settling in my chest.
So–I fell into the ocean? That’s how I got hurt? That’s why my m
emory’s all over the place?
Then why–why did it feel like there was more to it?
I bit my lip, my vice barely above a whisper, “But I want to call my
family–I miss my grandma.”
The air in the room shifted.
Ryan stiffened, as if caught off guard.
A sudden wave of unease crashed over me, my heart pounding

quickening. I stared at him, my voice turning urgent. “What? What’s
wrong? Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Seconds passed, stretching unbearably. Then, finally, he spoke, his vo
ice slow and deliberate.
“Gabby–your grandmother passed away some time ago.”
The world had shattered around me.
“What?”
I shot, eyes wide, my breath hitching in my throat.
Grandma–gone?
No. No, that’s impossible.
Ryan’s expression darkened, his tone careful, like he was afraid I’d
break, “Gabby–the doctor and I believe that your memory has
regressed a few years. But in reality–your grandmother passed away
recently from pancreatic cancer.”
“No–no, that can’t be true-” My hands clutched at my chest, my
breath coming in short, panicked bursts as tears burned down my
cheeks.
‘How could I forget something like that? How could I forget losing
her?‘
Through the haze of my tears, I looked at Ryan, my voice shaking,
“What about my mom? My sister? Are they okay?”

Ryan hesitated. His brows knitted slightly, and for the first time, I saw something flicker in his expression–something that looked a lot like-
guilt.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said, “They–passed away
too.”
The words slammed into me like a freight train.
It felt like a bomb had gone off in my mind, obliterating everything.
Everything inside me collapsed. “How could this be?”
My whole body shook as I gripped the blanket, gasping for air. A cold numbness spread through me, like the floor had been ripped out from under me. My chest tightened, the pain so overwhelming it felt like I
couldn’t breathe.
‘Mom and my sister–are gone too? Why don’t I remember any of this?’
I locked eyes onto Ryan, my voice rising in sheer desperation, “How
much have I forgotten? What do you know? Why am I here? And what
exactly is our relationship?”
Fear tightened its grip on me.
I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t know how much of my life had been
erased-
The uncertainty was terrifying.
Ryan suddenly moved before I could pull away. His touch was firm yet

gentle, his hand moving in slow, soothing circles over my back. His
voice was low, calm–almost cautious.
“Gabby, take it easy.” He murmured, his voice calm, controlled–like he
was trying not to startle me. “The doctor said your body’s still weak.
You can’t afford too much stress–for your sake and the baby’s.”
I froze.
The breath hitched in my throat. Slowly, I pulled back just enough to
look at him, my mind blank, “W–what–baby?”
Ryan’s gaze darkened, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. He
hesitated, just for a second, then exhaled, “You’re pregnant.”
The words sent a jolt through me. ‘Pregnant? I–I’m pregnant?‘
My hands trembled as I instinctively pressed them against my stomach. My abdomen felt flat, unchanged. But–was there really a
child growing inside me?
I looked up at him, barely able to get the words out, “Whose baby–is
it?”
The room fell into a heavy silence.
Ryan’s lips pressed into a thin line. His expression was unreadable,
like he was holding something back. A long pause stretched between us before he finally spoke, his voice quiet but firm.
“The baby is mine.”

He met my gaze, his next words dropping like a weight I wasn’t ready
to carry.
“I’m your husband.”
