The cruise ship came to a stop, just a few meters from the shore. Claire and I were still hanging high in the air above the raging ocean,
our lives hanging by a thread.
I looked down at the surging waves below, my mind replaying the horrifying scene when Toby was thrown into the ocean–again and
again.
I couldn’t bear to imagine it. A child so small, kidnapped, pushed into the freezing, merciless water. How terrified must he have been?
Toby–My boy-
As he fell into the water, did he struggle helplessly against the waves? Was he overwhelmed by fear? Was he crying out for me–calling “Mommy,” hoping to be saved?
But he was just a little boy, all alone in that dark, endless ocean. And I,
the mother he loved more than anything, wasn’t there to protect him.
The thought shattered me. The idea that he might have already be gone, lost to the ocean forever, was too much to bear. A sharp pain stabbed through my chest, stealing the air from my lungs.
Tears blurred my vision, and the grief of losing my child made it
impossible to breathe.
Without Toby, what was the point of living?

I squeezed my eyes shut. Maybe it would be easier to just let go–to
follow him into the abyss
Then, I heard Vincent’s voice.
“Gabby! Claire!”
I jerked my head up. Vincent stood on the shore, not far away. His
face ashen, his eyes filled with panic.
The masked man let out a cold laugh, his tone laced with amusement,
The game begins now.”
“Vincent, help me! Save our baby!” Claire sobbed hysterically, her voice shaking, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t want to die–Our child
doesn’t want to die-”
And in that moment, I finally understood this was what the masked
man wanted.
He had kidnapped both Claire and me, lured Vincent here, and now–he was forcing him to choose.
Claire continued crying, her expression filled with terror, looking utterly fragile and pitiful. But something about it felt off to me.
Could she be acting? I had seen her put on a performance before.
And this masked man–who was he? Was he working with her?
I didn’t know. But a deep suspicion took root in my gut, growing
stronger by the second.

Before I could process it, the masked man suddenly pulled out a dagger, waving it in front of us. Then, he sneered and shouted at
Vincent,
“These two women–you can only save one.”
“Vincent, who will you choose?”
The world seemed to stop.

Vincent’s voice was sharp with rage, “Who the hell are you? Why are you doing this? Why did you kidnap them?”
The masked man scoffed, his expression didn’t change, “That’s not important. You have no right to ask questions. You have three minutes–Pick one, or they both die.”
My heart pounded so hard it was defeating.
This was exactly what I had expected.
But at the same time, I already knew the outcome.
Vincent would definitely save Claire, wouldn’t he?
He loved her. She was carrying his child. There was no way he’d let her
die.
And me? He had already thrown me away.
But then, his voice rang out–firm and unyielding, “I want to save them
both.”

He tried to negotiate with the masked man, “How much do you want?
I’ll pay you! Just let them go!”
The masked man scoffed, “If I let them both go, what fun would that
be?”
Vincent’s desperation escalated. He gestured toward a suitcase
beside him, his voice rising, “There’s a million dollars here! If that’s not enough, I’ll give you more! Two million! Ten million! Whatever you
want!”
“You’re getting on my nerves.” The masked man sighed, as if bored.
Then, before anyone could react, he raised his dagger, twisted the blade, and aimed it directly at the rope above my head.
My body went rigid and my breath came to an abrupt halt.
Was he going to cut the rope?
