I put my phone away and looked up at Vincent, keeping my voice steady, “What do you want?”
He took a deep breath, his gaze lingering on my face before speaking slowly, “Grandfather’s condition isn’t stable–let’s postpone our divorce for now.”
I pressed my lips together and rejected his suggestion outright, “I’m worried about Grandfather too, but we can handle the divorce quietly. We just need to keep it from him.”
I didn’t want to drag this divorce out any longer.
Vincent’s expression darkened, his brows furrowing, “Why are you in such a rush to get divorced?”
I let out a bitter laugh, meeting his gaze, “What about you? Aren’t you eager to divorce me so you can marry Claire?”
He went silent, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he struggled to respond.
“If that’s the case, let’s draft and sign the divorce papers as soon as possible,” I said firmly.
Vincent exhaled sharply, irritation flashing in his eyes. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it, taking a deep drag as the smoke curled around his fingers.
Thinking of the baby, I instinctively stepped back to avoid the smoke.
Vincent noticed my movement, studied me for a second, then put out his cigarette and tossed it in the trash, “Fine, I’ll bring you the papers soon. But-”
He paused, his tone turning serious, “After signing, we’ll wait before making it official. We can keep it from Grandfather, but if word gets out somehow, what if he can’t handle it?”
My heart clenched as I pictured Grandfather’s frail form in the hospital bed.
He had a point–Grandfather’s health was too fragile for any more shocks.
After a moment, I nodded, “Okay. But let’s at least get the divorce agreement signed.”
For me, this was progress. At least there was an end in sight.
Vincent’s expression was unreadable, as if he wanted to say more.
I frowned, “What else?”
He hesitated before asking, ” -Is Ryan treating you well?”
I froze, caught off guard, then let out a scornful laugh, “That’s none of your business.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened, his voice laced with frustration, “Gabby, I’m serious. You and Ryan–you’re too different. You won’t be happy.”
His words lit a fire in me. I glared at him, my voice dripping with sarcasm, “What right do you have to say that?”
He was speechless. His expression flickered between frustration and guilt.
I smirked, turned on my heel, and got into my car without another word, leaving him behind with

Back home, I called Sylvia.
I vented about everything–Claire’s affair, Daniel’s weird behavior, Vincent delaying the divorce–all of
- it.
Sylvia was silent for a moment before exclaiming, “That’s insane!”
I sighed, rubbing my temples, “Too wild. It’s giving me a headache-”
“So what’s your plan? Are you really going to put the divorce on hold?”
I groaned, feeling stuck, “Vincent has a point. Grandfather’s too weak right now. If he finds out, it could be dangerous.”
“Ugh–why is getting divorced so complicated for you? It’s like the universe is throwing obstacles in your way,,” Sylvia muttered.
“It is what it is,” I replied helplessly, “I just have to deal with it-”
We talked for a while longer until exhaustion finally set in. After saying goodnight, I hung up.
But just minutes later, my phone rang again.
Claire’s name lit up the screen.
My heart tightened as the memory of her outside the hospital flashed in my mind. My fingers curled slightly, tension creeping up my spine.
Why was she calling me now? Was she feeling guilty?
After a brief hesitation, I answered, “Hello?”
Her voice came through, careful and probing, “Gabby, did you hear about Grandfather’s heart attack and hospitalization?”
I narrowed my eyes, keeping my voice neutral, “Yeah.”
There was a pause before she asked, “So–did you go to the hospital today to see him?”
And there it was.
She was fishing, trying to figure out if I’d seen her with that man.
A cold smile tugged at my lips. Instead of answering directly, I asked, “Claire, do you really love Vincent?”
