Chapter 85 Grandfather’s Emergency
Mery
Just as I was about to reply to the message, my phone buzzed, the vibration jarringly loud in the silent
room.
Looking down, I saw Vincent’s name flashed on the screen.
I furrowed, hesitating for a second before rejecting the call.
But within moments, he called again. I rejected it once more, but he kept dialing like a madman, each attempt more relentless than the last.
A sinking feeling hit me, and with gritted teeth, I finally answered, “Hello?”
“Gabby–Grandfather’s had an emergency!” Vincent’s voice burst through the speaker, raw with panic. My mind went blank, like I’d been struck by lightning. My fingers clenched around the phone, my voice trembling involuntarily, “What–what are you talking about? What happened to him?”
“He had a sudden heart attack! He’s in emergency surgery right now!” Vincent’s voice was thick with anxiety.
Heart attack-
Those words slammed into me like a punch to the chest. My body trembled.
Grandfather had treated me like his own in the Hudson family–he was the closest thing I had to real family.
And now, he was in an operating room, fighting for his life.
Tears burned at the back of my eyes, but I forced them down, pushing myself to think straight, “Which hospital? Send me the address.”
The moment I hung up, I took a deep breath, grabbed my coat, and bolted out the door.
On the way, I sent Ryan a message:
[Grandfather had a heart attack. He’s in emergency. He’s in surgery now. I need to get to the hospital. Starlight Bay will have to wait.]
His reply came almost instantly.
[I’m already on my way to the hospital.]
My fingers tightened around the phone as I read his message, my throat clenching.
The entire drive, I prayed nonstop. Please–let him be okay.
As soon as I arrived, I ran straight to the emergency room.
Vincent was slumped on a bench, looking completely wrecked–his face pale, his eyes red–rimmed from crying.
Seeing him like that made my stomach drop. My voice barely came out, “How is he?”
Vincent lifted his head slowly, his gaze hollow, his voice rough “Still in surgery–the doctors said it

doesn’t look good.”
The floor felt like it vanished beneath me.
My legs went weak, and I stumbled, nearly falling.
Just then, a firm hand quickly caught me just in time, steadying me.
Startled, I looked up and met a pair of deep, reassuring eyes.
It was Ryan.
He gently patted my shoulder, his voice deep and calm, “Don’t be scared.”
Just those simple words grounded me.
For a second, I wanted to break down, to collapse into his arms and sob like a child.
But I shoved it all down.
Forcing myself to stand on my own, I stepped back and murmured, “Thanks.”
On My
Just as I gained my balance, Vincent stormed over and grabbed my arm, yanking me to his side. He hissed under his breath, “What the hell, Gabby? Our grandfather’s fighting for his life, and you two are having a moment? Seriously? Read the damn room!”
His grip was brutal, making my wrist throb with pain.
I yanked free, glaring at him, “Back off, Vincent,” I snapped. “We’re getting divorced–you don’t get to put your hands on me anymore.”
His face twisted with rage, like I’d hit a nerve, “Oh, so the divorce papers aren’t even signed, and you’re already jumping into bed with him? Real classy, Gabby. Got any self–respect left?”
My blood boiled, I met his glare, cold and unflinching. “That’s rich, coming from you. “Vincent opened his mouth to fire back, but Ryan stepped between us. His voice was calm, but his eyes were sharp and warning, “Save the drama for after Grandfather pulls through, Vincent.*
Vincent’s jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might crack. He looked like he wanted to throw a punch–but after a long, tense beat, he finally shut up. Then, just as the tension reached a boiling point, the emergency room doors swung open and the doctor stepped out.
