I turned to Ryan, catching the determination in his eyes–along with something unexpectedly soft in his gaze.
That look nearly made me melt.
Good lord! Was he sure he studied law? Because, honestly, he should’ve been in Hollywood! His acting skills were next level!
“I–I knew you two were together-” Vincent stammered, is voice unsteady. “Yeah, there’s nothing I can do about it! But Grandfather will find out sooner or later. Uncle Ryan, you better watch yourselves!”
Ryan’s expression didn’t waver, “You should take your own advice. Vincent, you betrayed Gabby first. She’s done nothing wrong, so you have no right to judge her,” His tone sharpened as he added. “As for my father, if you’re brave enough, go ahead and tell him about me and Gabby.”
“But let’s be real–you won’t.” His lips curved into a slow, taunting smirk, his eyes flashing dangerously.
Vincent stiffened, stumbling back.
“You’re both–impossible!” he burst out, throwing us a glare before storming off with Claire.
Watching them leave, I felt a tangled mess of emotions twisting inside me.
Even though I tried to block it out could still bear Claire’s sickly voice as she clung to Vincent, playing the victim.

“Vince–Gabby’s gone too far. How could she openly betray you with your Uncle? And humiliate me- her own sister–like this, in public-”
But this time, Vincent didn’t comfort Claire. Instead, he glanced back at me, his eyes burning with rage, and spat out, “Just wait until Grandfather finds out. Let’s see how you handle that!”
With that, he yanked Claire out of the restaurant, never looking back.
I let out a dry, bitter laugh. The argument, the anger–it all faded into a heavy, invisible weight pressing down on me.
As soon as they were gone, I tried to shaking off the disgusting feeling those two cheaters had left
behind.
When I turned back to Ryan, I found him already looking at me.
My heart fluttered–a mix of embarrassment and something else I wasn’t ready to name. Breaking the silence, I gave a sheepish smile, “Thanks for playing along back there. I would’ve looked like a fool in
front of Vincent otherwise.”
Ryan’s lips quirked up in an easy smile, “It was nothing.”
“No,” I said, more serious this time, “you’ve helped me so many times. I should find a way to repay you.”
His gaze darkened–suddenly intense. Stepping closer, his voice dropped into something deep and husky, “No repayment necessary.”

I sucked in a breath. That close, I caught the faint scent of cedar on his skin, crisp and warm.
My heart pounded, the rest of the world fading.

Then Ryan reached out, lifting my chin with his long fingers. His eyes locked onto mine, unreadable. And then he suddenly asked in a low voice, “Want to turn this act into reality?”
That question exploded in my mind like a bomb, leaving me frozen and blank.
Before I could process what was happening, Ryan pressed me against the cool wall–then kissed me.
Time froze. His kiss shattered my defenses, blurring the lines between logic and emotion.
Unlike his reckless, drunken kiss before, this one was intense–deliberate.
Pressed against the wall, my breath came in quick, uneven gasps.
His fingers trailed down my spine, sending a rush of electricity through me. My legs went weak, and without thinking, I melted into his embrace, my mind racing.
Last time, Ryan was drunk. But now–he was completely sober. Oh my God, why was he kissing me?
