I pulled out Toby’s printed photo, staring at his smiling face with a mix of emotions.
Now that Vincent was focused solely on Claire and their baby, it was clear he didn’t care about Toby anymore.
But Ryan was still investigating, and I wasn’t about to give up either.
“Toby, wait for me,” I whispered, leaning down to kiss the photo.
I spent the entire day showing Toby’s photo around, asking anyone I could for leads.
By sunset, I dragged myself back to my apartment, empty–handed.
Today’s search had come up short, but with both the police and Ryan working hard, I couldn’t just sit around.
I opened my laptop, ready to review some law materials for work prep. Right away, I noticed an email from Oracle Attorneys.
“An acceptance letter?” My heart raced as I read the subject line.
It was real–I’d gotten in!
I’d passed the interview, even with my six–year career gap. They’d offered me a role as an associate attorney.
It made sense to start as an associate, given my lack of recent experience, but this was huge.
This was an amazing opportunity!
My mood instantly improved, and I grabbed my phone to call Sylvia to share the good news.
“Gabby, you got into Oracle Attorneys?” Sylvia’s voice practically pierced my eardrums.
“Yep! I almost thought Ryan pulled some strings, but he promised he wouldn’t. So, I guess I really earned this on my own?”
“Of course! Congratulations, Gabby!” Sylvia sounded even more thrilled than I was. “I always knew you had it in you–you just lost yourself with that jerk before. Now’s your time to shine!”
“Don’t forget about me when you’re rolling in cash!” Sylvia teased.
“How could I? But let’s not get ahead of ourselves–I’m just starting out as a junior associate.”
“Wait, a junior associate? Does that mean you’ll be working with Ryan? Is he going to mentor you?” Sylvia squealed.
“I hadn’t thought of that-“I hesitated.
“That’s totally it!” Sylvia screamed through the phone. “He likes you! He’s definitely going to personally mentor you and then confess his feelings! Oh my god, I’m getting excited!”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“Syl, have you been reading too many romance novels? It’s not like that. He likes someone else–Miss

Miller, the Bellton tycoon’s daughter.” The thought made my chest tighten, though I couldn’t figure out why.
“Don’t say that–it could cause misunderstandings,” I pressed my lips together. “And I have something important to tell you–Claire’s really pregnant, and Vincent agreed to the divorce. The property division is settled, we just need to sign the agreement.”
“What? Pregnant with your husband’s baby? That homewrecker! And Vincent, that scumbag!” Sylvia exploded, cursing their entire family tree.
“He’s giving me 10% of Hudson Enterprises‘ shares and a villa,” I said calmly.
“Well, at least he’s got some decency left!” Sylvia quipped.
I couldn’t help laughing, “You’re such a gold digger.”
“So our Gabby’s going to be rich? I better stick close to you!” Sylvia teased. “But seriously, don’t let Claire find out about the property division. She might cause trouble.”
“Yeah, I know,” I murmured.
I couldn’t forget how Claire and Jean tried to force me to sign away everything last time. Who knows what she’d do if she found out Vincent was giving me this much.
After chatting a bit longer, I hung up. Just as I was setting my phone down, it buzzed again–Ryan was calling.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Gabby, got the acceptance letter?” Ryan’s warm tone made me smile. “Ready to be my associate attorney?”
I nearly dropped the phone in shock, “Wait, You mean–you’re going to personally mentor me?”
