“That’s ridiculous!” Claire snapped. “Vince, Gabrielle found out I was pregnant and went crazy. She tried to hurt my baby–she pushed me!”
“Why would I force her to sign any divorce papers? Weren’t you two planning to divorce anyway?” She looked to Jean. “Mom can back me up. We’re both her daughters–why should she lie or take sides?”
“Vincent, Claire’s telling the truth,” Jean quickly added. “Gabby completely lost it when she found out about Claire’s pregnancy. That’s why she acted so aggressively. She tried to hurt Claire, and I had no choice but to intervene.”
“And about that nonsense regarding an agreement–where’s the proof?”
Jean smiled sweetly at me, her tone dripping with faux sincerity, “Sorry Gabby, Mom only stepped in to stop you–it wasn’t meant to hurt you. I hope I didn’t accidentally harm you, did I?”
I stood there in disbelief. She had switched roles faster than I could blink.
“You two are masters of manipulation–it’s disgusting.” I said with a cold laugh. “Lie all you want. I’ve said my piece. If Vincent wants to believe your nonsense, that’s on him. I’m done here.” Straightening my clothes, I turned to leave the toxic scene behind.
“Gabby!” Vincent’s voice followed me. “Please, give me a minute. We need to talk.”
“Sorry.” I said curtly, not looking back. “I’m busy. Go play house with your girlfriend and her baby.”
“And about the divorce–my lawyer will handle it.” Without another word, I walked away, leaving no room for argument.
“Gabby, wait!” Vincent called after me.
“Vince, my stomach hurts-” Claire’s voice rang out, dripping with exaggerated pain.
Vincent stopped in his tracks. I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly. How exhausting.
Maybe divorcing Vincent would be the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I placed a hand on my stomach, steadying myself. At least he didn’t know I was pregnant. Whether I keep the baby or not, Vincent would never know this child existed. He doesn’t deserve to be a father.
Back at my apartment, I took a quick shower and climbed into bed. As I Lay there, my thoughts spiraled.
The events of the past few days replayed in my mind like a broken record.
I made a firm decision–It was time to sever ties with Vincent and that so–called “family“! Completely.
I, needed to start fresh. A brand–new chapter of my life.
**
The next morning, I got up early, made a quick breakfast, and prepared to head out.
I couldn’t just sit around waiting for answers about Toby.
The law firm hadn’t given me any updates, so today I planned to hit the streets again, showing his photo and hoping for any leads.

As as I opened my door, I saw Ryan stepping out of his apartment across the hall.
He moved leisurely, his casual outfit somehow making him look even more handsome.
My heart skipped as vivid memories surfaced–Ryan, drunk, pulling me close, his lips on mine.
Just thinking about it made my face flush and my body tense.
That intense feeling–I couldn’t forget it no matter how hard I tried.
“Morning, Gabby.” Ryan said, flashing a slight smile.

“Morning.” I replied awkwardly, then remembering how drunk he’d been, then asked, “Are you feeling better?”
“Much better.” His eyes crinkled with warmth. “Sorry for being such a mess. I must’ve been a pain to deal with.”
“Don’t worry about it.” I said, clearing my throat. “I’m glad you’re okay. I- I should get going.”
My thoughts raced. ‘Had he remembered the kiss? If he did, what would he think?‘
Before I could overthink further, Ryan stepped forward, resting his arm against the doorframe, blocking my way, “Wait,” he said.
