It was Vincent’s voice.

I froze. Claire instantly let go of me and crumpled to the floor, clutching her stomach dramatically. Her tearful eyes locked on mine, and in a weak voice, she whimpered, “Gabby, why did you push me?”
“My baby, my baby-” she gasped, sounding terrified, her face painted with vulnerability.
Vincent was already moving toward us, but the moment he saw Claire on the ground, he rushed right past me to help her up.
Jean released my arm and, in a flurry, snatched the divorce papers, stuffing them haphazardly into her pocket.
She leaned close to my ear and whispered, “Gabby, you can see Vincent cares about Claire. I’m not taking sides–I just want you both to be happy.”
“If you divorce Vincent, your sister and Vincent can finally be with the people they love. You wouldn’t have to stay in a marriage that’s going nowhere. You could find someone who truly loves you. Isn’t that the best solution for everyone?”
Her words were so absurd, I almost laughed out loud.
Best solution for everyone? She just wanted to sacrifice my happiness for Claire’s!
“Your favoritism is written all over your face. Don’t bother trying to sell me this garbage–I’m not buying it.” I shot back coldly, stepping aside by myself.
I pulled away from her grip. My arm throbbed where she had pinched me, and I rubbed the sore spot as I stepped aside to watch the scene unfold.
As repulsive as Jean’s actions were, she had a point about one thing–Vincent didn’t love me. Our marriage was nothing more than a hollow facade.
Whenever Claire needed something–anything–Vincent would drop everything, drop me, and run to
her. She was always his first priority.
“Claire, are you okay?” Vincent asked, his face etched with concern as he helped her to a nearby
couch.
“Gabby pushed me,” she whimpered, cradling her stomach like it was made of glass. “Our baby-”
“Are you sure the baby is mine?” Vincent asked, his expression was unreadable as his gaze flicked
between Claire and me.
Claire’s lips quivered, “You don’t believe me? That night when you came to find me abroad-”
“Enough.” Vincent cut her off, his voice sharp. After making sure she was settled, he turned and
walked over to me, his eyes locked onto mine.
“Gabby-“I could hear the tremor in his voice.
“Yes, I pushed her,” I interrupted, my tone dripping with sarcasm. “I want her dead. Go ahead and lecture me–I’ll admit to it. Happy now?”

I could almost hear the words forming on his lips, ‘Why did you push her?‘ But I didn’t give him the
chance.
Claire’s theatrics were old news–I was numb to them now. I didn’t even bother explaining anymore. I didn’t care anymore whether Vincent believed me or her.
“Gabby, that’s not what I meant-” he started, but I cut him off with a bitter laugh.
“Don’t bother. I’m done.” I curved my lips into a smile. “You already know about Claire’s pregnancy, rushing to see her in the middle of the night. You two really are perfect for each other. I won’t get in the way of your happy little family.”
“Gabby, don’t misunderstand! Claire and I-” Vincent looked desperate, like he wanted to explain something.
“Misunderstand what?” I scoffed. “You got her pregnant–what’s there to misunderstand?” I couldn’t help but laugh mockingly. “Go take care of your true love and your baby.”
He hesitated, his hand reaching for my shoulder, but I stepped back before he could touch me, “What were you all fighting about earlier? You look pale–is your hand hurting again?”
“Don’t come near me.” I stepped back, avoiding his approach. “You make me sick.”
He froze, his face falling.
“By the way, your sweet and innocent Claire teamed up with my so–called mother just now to corner me into signing divorce papers. They wanted me to walk away with nothing.” I gave a humorless laugh. “If you’d shown up even a minute later, they might have pulled it off.”
“What?” Vincent’s eyes widened as he turned to Claire, disbelief and betrayal written all over his face, “Is this true?”
