Chapter 56 Something Happened To Your Sister
Startled by the call, I quickly pulled myself together and asked, “What’s going on?”
“Your sister, your sister she-” Mom hesitated.
“What about her? Another failed suicide attempt or car wreck?” I shot back, my tone dripping with sarcasm.
“Just come to the hospital right away! We need to tell you something important!” she snapped, her voice sharp with impatience.
“Sorry, I’ve got better things to do,” I replied coldly, ready to end the
call.
But Mom’s angry yell stopped me, “Gabrielle, how can you be so
heartless? Your sister’s in trouble, and you won’t even come to the
hospital?”
“Is she dead, No? Then don’t waste my time.” I hung up without
hesitation.
Setting my phone down, an uneasy feeling crept in.
Claire and I were both her daughters, but Mom only ever cared about
Claire.
I’d grown up with her indifference and coldness, but even after all these years, it still stung. How could anyone not crave their mother’s love. I wished I could be like everyone else with a warm family and

The phone rang again, but I was done with the interruptions. I switched it to the silent mode and tossed it aside.
I scrolled through some news, then browsed the menu. Just as I
placed my order, there was a knock at the door of the private dining
room.

“Come in,” I said, glancing up.
Ryan walked in, followed by a man in glasses. He looked about thirty, polished, and professional.
“Didn’t expect you so soon? I thought you had a meeting?” I asked,
surprise.
“It wrapped up early. Didn’t want to keep you waiting too long,” Ryan
replied, pulling out a chair and tossing his jacket over the back.
Our eyes met for a moment, and I quickly looked away, feeling a
sudden warmth rising to my cheeks.
“I’ve already ordered some dishes. Do you want to add anything?” I
handed Ryan the menu.
“This is Drake Woods, a good friend and my college classmate. He’s
also our firm’s top family law attorney. He’ll be handling your divorce
from Vincent,” Ryan explained, gesturing toward the man beside him.
“Mr. Woods, I’ve heard great things about you. Thank you–and Ryan–f

Though this was our first meeting, I recognized his name. If memory served, he’d handled a high–profile divorce case involving a billionaire.
I hadn’t expected Ryan to bring someone like Drake for my case. This gave me a real shot at winning. His fees were probably sky–high, but I’d figure it out.
Divorce was my only way out. I had to divorce Vincent!
“Mrs. Hudson, why don’t you tell me what you’re looking for,” Drake asked politely, his tone calm and measured.
“I just want a successful divorce and custody of my son, Toby. I’m not after Vincent’s money,” I said, taking a sip of lemon water. “Oh, and please call me Ms. May–I won’t be Mrs. Hudson much longer.”
“Understood, Ms. May,” Drake nodded, exchanging a subtle glance with Ryan. Then, almost under his breath, he added, “Although, you
might end up being Mrs. Hudson again before long.”
I froze. His last words were barely audible.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, looking between the two of
them.
‘Was he joking? Being Mrs. Hudson again?‘
