After Rachel’s comment, everyone stared at me, eyes locked on me.
Their stares made me uneasy, and a cold sweat started to form on my
forehead.
“Honestly, when I was pregnant with Vincent, I had morning sickness
just like her,” Rachel eyed me up and down. “But Gabrielle and Vincent
are getting divorced, so if she’s pregnant now-”
“Shut up! What divorce? They’re not getting divorced!” Henry slammed
his wine glass on the table, spilling expensive wine everywhere.
Rachel felt silent, looking reluctant.
“Gabby, are you really pregnant?” Henry asked, his anger fading into
hopeful concern.
Faced with his expectations, I felt guilty about lying.
I knew Grandpa would be excited about a baby. But I had to lie. I’d
already decided to divorce Vincent and not keep the baby.
“No, Grandpa, I’m not pregnant. Just some stomach issues lately,” I
shook my head. “Sorry to disappoint you.”
“That’s alright, you and Vincent are still young–you can have kids
anytime,” Henry’s smile wavered with a flash of disappointment
before he gave me a concerned look. “Gabby, you should see a doctor
about your stomach. Should I have our family doctor check on you

“No need,” I startled, quickly refusing. “I’ve already been to the hospital
and got some medicine. I’ll be fine in a couple of days.”
“Okay, but tell us if you’re still feeling unwell,” Henry, thankfully, didn’t push further.
The servers came in, carrying a spread of delicacies. There was lots of
seafood, which made my stomach turn. I tried to fight back my
nausea.
Just then, my phone buzzed–it was a message from Ryan:
[Are you okay?]
Instead of replying, I just gave Ryan a slight smile across the table and
shook my head, signaling I was fine.
As I set my phone down, I noticed Vincent beside me staring me with
ice–cold eyes. His gaze was so chilling it sent a shiver down my spine,
my heart skipping a beat.
Daniel raised his wine glass again to try to lighten the mood while I
quietly poured myself some juice.
Maybe because Vincent and I were getting divorced, I felt out of place
at this family dinner.
Vincent suddenly peeled a shrimp and placed it on my plate. “Gabby,
eat more. I remember you like shrimp.”

I frowned, about to speak, when he leaned close to my ear and
whispered, “Grandpa’s here today, let’s make him happy.”
I glanced over to see Henry watching us with a pleased smile.

I felt helpless, knowing Vincent was putting on the act of the perfect couple to please Grandpa. But our marriage was already broken beyond saving–I didn’t even have the energy to pretend anymore.
Still, I couldn’t cause a scene now, so I quietly ate the shrimp Vincent
had peeled.
The truth was, I never liked shrimp. I had forced myself to like seafood
because Vincent loved it. In the past, having Vincent peel shrimp for
me would’ve made me overjoyed. Now, it felt meaningless.
After dinner, Henry kept telling stories about when Toby was still at home, eventually tearing up. I couldn’t help but feel emotional too. Since Toby’s disappearance, I’d tried to stay strong, but I thought
about him all the time.
“I’ll investigate quickly and try to find Toby as soon as possible,” Ryan spoke up. For some reason, just hearing his voice made me feel more
at ease.
“No need for Uncle Ryan to worry about it,” Vincent suddenly wrapped
his arm around my waist, glaring coldly at Ryan, as if marking his territory. “Toby is MY child. I’ll find him. You’re so concerned about him, people might start thinking he’s YOUR son!”
