Chapter 37 Divorce Is Inevitable
I glanced between Ryan and Henry, feeling torn.
“Go ahead, kid. Ryan must have something important to say. I’ll take a
short walk. Don’t worry, my caregiver will be with me,” Henry smiled,
smiling and patting my shoulder. “Just think about what I said, okay?”
“I can see it here-” he pointed to my chest. “Vincent still has a place.”
I forced a smile and mumbled, “Okay.”
Of course, I was just humoring Henry–my decision to divorce Vincent
wasn’t going to change.
Henry finally left, still smiling contentedly.
As soon as the door was closed, Ryan motioned for me to come over.
“I know about Brandon’s suicide,” he said plainly, his voice calm.
“How did you find out so fast?” I asked, stunned.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on the police station,” he said, frowning.
“Brandon’s death just shuts down our lead. My father’s been asking
me about Toby’s whereabouts lately. I’ve been looking into it as best I
can. Now that Brandon’s dead, the only way forward is to dig into his
friends and relatives. Maybe we’ll find something.”
“Did Grandpa ask you to investigate Toby’s disappearance?” I stared
at him, holding my breath.

Ryan paused, then nodding slightly, “Yes.”

His answer left me feeling both relieved and a little let down. It was
hard to explain.
Of course, Ryan was doing it for Grandpa’s sake. I needed to stop
overthinking things…
“Brandon’s suicide wasn’t an accident. Someone planned it, and I’ll
find out who did it,” Ryan said, his eyes hardening.
It seemed like we were on the same stage.
“Don’t let the lack of leads stress you out,” he added. “I’ll figure
something out.” His steady gaze met mine, bringing me some
comfort.
“Is there anything I can do?” I bit my lip. “I’m Toby’s mother, but with him missing, it feels like I’m just–powerless.”
I hated depending on others for everything, and I loathed this
helplessness.
“Who said you can’t do anything?” Ryan raised an eyebrow. “Since Toby went missing, haven’t you been to the police station every day?”
“Leave the investigation to me. You focus on keeping up with the case and talking to the cops. And hey, you can cook something nice for me
every now and then. How does that sound?”
I suddenly remembered my earlier promise to cook for Ryan once he
was discharged. I quickly nodded, “Got it, leave it to me!”
“I’ll be looking forward to it,” he smiled, his eyes softening.
My cheeks warmed, and I found myself unable to hold his gaze, “I have something to do. I’ll visit you tomorrow, after you’re discharged?”
“Sounds good,” Ryan replied, still smiling.
I was feeling flustered.
I was about to leave when he added, “Gabrielle, don’t take my father’s words too seriously. Do what’s in your heart and don’t let others
control your life.”
I understood what he meant–I needed to make my own decision about divorcing Vincent, without letting anyone else sway me.
His words touched me deeply, and I nodded with conviction, “I will!”
Divorce is inevitable. No one can change my mind!
