Chapter 15 I’m Starting A New Life
I stumbled, losing my balance, and crashed awkwardly to the ground.
Thinking of the baby, I protected my belly instinctively.
“Vincent, are you out of your mind?” I clutched my abdomen and glared at him.

“Gabby, Claire’s already dealing with grandmother’s death. Stop making it worse.” Vincent helped Claire to her feet, his face full of concern. “Claire, are you okay?”
“Vincent, I swear I didn’t cause grandmother’s death–Gabby’s just misunderstanding everything.” Claire played the victim, leaning on Vincent’s shoulder as tears streamed down her face.
That’s when it clicked–why Claire had suddenly collapsed and was acting all fragile.
She must’ve seen Vincent and decided to put on a show.
How pathetic! She should quit modeling and try acting instead.
“Vincent, Claire’s dressed like she’s heading out for a date. Are you sure she’s mourning grandmother? She looks pretty happy to me!” I said sarcastically, standing up and straightening my clothes.
Thankfully, my stomach felt fine–the baby seemed alright.
But knowing Vincent had shoved me down for Claire’s sake made my blood run cold.
“I- I just wanted to look nice to say goodbye to grandmother.” Claire explained, wiping away her fake tears. “Gabby, you misunderstood. We’re sisters-”
“Enough.” I interrupted, “We’re not sisters. I’m not lucky enough to be your sister.”
Then I straightened my posture and shot Vincent a proud look, “I’ll get the divorce papers ready soon. Please sign them as soon as possible as they’re done.”
Vincent’s face darkened.
I turned and walked away without another word.
My arm throbbed–probably from when Vincent shoved me.
From now on, I’ll remember every moment of pain he causes me. Goodbye to the old me. A new life
starts today.
In the church, the choir sang hymns–it was time to say goodbye.
As Josephine was laid to rest, my mother sobbed, watching the dirt fall onto the coffin.
I stood frozen, watching as the coffin was slowly covered, my beloved grandmother returning to dust.
I tried to hold it together, but the tears came anyway, blurring my vision.
I silently prayed for Josephine, hoping that she find peace in the most beautiful heaven.
Time dragged on.
By the time I looked at Josephine’s headstone, there were almost no tears left to shed.

Pulling myself together, I glanced over at Claire, who was wailing nearby.
Her voice was hoarse from crying, but her eyes were dry.
Tch, maybe she should reconsider acting–her performance still needs a lot of work.
Seems like her tears only came when she’s playing victim for Vincent.
After the funeral, I planned to head back to the mansion I shared with Vincent.
It was time to pack up my things and leave.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I checked–it was a message from Ryan:
[Don’t be too sad. Your grandmother has become a star in the sky.]

My heart warmed. I looked up at the sky. Though it was still daylight and no stars were visible, I could almost see my grandmother smiling down on me.
Grandmother, I promise I’ll live the life you always wanted for me. I’ll see all the beautiful places for
you.
I looked down at my phone and typed a reply to Ryan:
[Uncle Ryan, take care of yourself. When you’re out of the hospital, I’ll cook something delicious for you.]
I figured, since he’d gotten hurt because of me, cooking something nice to help him recover was the le ast I could do.
Just as I was finishing my message, Vincent’s gloomy face appeared in front of me.
He leaned in, his eyes dark and cold, demanding, “Gabby, who are you texting?”
