Chapter 8 Formally Filing For Divorce
The pain, such an unbearable pain.
Before I lost consciousness, my mind was flooded with thoughts of Toby and my unborn child.
A handsome face flashed before my eyes, but my heavy eyelids wouldn’t let me see clearly.
Exhausted and in pain, I let my eyes close.
Then I drifted into a dream.
In it, Vincent was holding Claire, coldly walking away from me.
I saw Toby–my child–and I desperately chased after him, only to watch him slip further and further
away.
Then Josephine appeared, smiling lovingly at me. But when I reached for her hand, I couldn’t grasp it.
“No!” I screamed, suddenly sitting up in bed.
“Ma’am, you’re awake?” Liz, the nanny, hurried over to wipe the sweat from my face.
I Looked around, and realized I was in a hospital room. Liz was the only one there.
My left arm was bandaged and still hurt when I moved it.
“Ma’am, there was a shooting at the wedding. The police are investigating. I heard it might’ve been an attempted murder-” Liz trailed off, pressing her lips together.
I froze.
‘Murder? Those bullets–they were aimed at me! Who would want to kill me?‘
“Did they find the shooter?” I asked, my voice was hoarse, barely a whisper.
“Not yet. It was too chaotic–the police are still investigating,” Liz replied.
Then, panic set in. I grabbed her hand anxiously, “Grandma–how’s she?”
And that person who lunged toward me–who was that?
“Your grandmother is still in emergency,” Liz hesitated.
“I need to see her!” I threw back the covers, ready to get out of bed.
But Liz stopped me, “Ma’am, you’re injured. Please rest! The doctor said the bullet just grazed your arm -you need to recover quietly. Also, are you pregnant? The doctor said the baby was lucky, no harm
done.”
Thinking of the baby, I calmed down a bit, “Liz, does anyone else know about my pregnancy?”
Liz shook her head, “The emergency room situation was the priority–everyone’s there. I stayed with you, so only I know.”
“Keep it a secret,” I said, “and ask the doctor too,” I patted her hand. “Please.”
“Why?” Liz asked, confused.

I didn’t explain, rushing toward the emergency room, “Just remember–keep it a secret?”
When I arrived, I saw a crowd gathered outside. They looked surprised when they saw me.
“Gabby, you’re awake,” Vincent said, guilt flashing in his eyes.
I ignored him, my focus fixed only on the emergency room doors.
Suddenly, the doors opened, and the doctor came out.
“I’m sorry, we’ve lost her vital signs,” he said, removing his mask.
I broke down instantly.
“No, no, this can’t be!‘ I shook my head, crying. Gathering the strength to look at Josephine, I saw a body covered by a white sheet.
In desperation, I reached out with my right hand to lift the sheet.
My whole body was shaking, my hand trembling uncontrollably.
Unless I saw Grandma’s death with my own eyes, I couldn’t accept it!
“Gabby, let Grandma rest in peace!” Mom said softly, her eyes filled with tears.
“It’s my fault, all my fault,” Claire sobbed, her hands covering her face, “I shouldn’t have told her about Toby being missing.”
But I didn’t see any real grief, or any guilt in her expression.
“Grandma was elderly and had pancreatic cancer,” Vincent said, sighing as he patted Claire’s shoulder, “Don’t blame yourself too much.”
Hearing this, my anger burned brighter.
“Vincent, Claire, you two killed her!” I lunged at Vincent, grabbing his collar with my right hand.
“Gabby, how can you say that?” Vincent said helplessly, “I’m grieving too, but—”
“Shut up!” I shouted, raising my right hand and slapping him hard across the face.
The slap echoed through the hallway, leaving Vincent stunned.
“Vincent,” I said, my voice steady with cold fury, “I always thought that if I loved you enough, we could be happy. Now I see how wrong I was. I want a divorce!”
