Chapter 3 Something Happened To Our Child
Divorce? I’d never even considered it before.
I had a crush on Vincent for so many years, and marrying him had felt like a fate.
I treasured our marriage, loving Vincent with everything I had. And, we had a child!

But now, I was starting to waver. If Vincent still loved my sister, what was I even holding on for?
“You can’t be serious,” I looked into Ryan’s eyes, finding them as unreadable as ever.
Even if I did want a divorce, why would Vincent’s uncle want to help me?
Without saying much, Ryan pulled out a gold–embossed business card and handed it to me, “If you need anything, come see me at this law firm.”
My hand trembled as I took the card.
Oracle Attorneys, Ryan Hudson–Senior Partner.
“Thank you, Uncle Ryan.” I said, clutching the card tightly.
I wasn’t sure what Ryan meant, but having a heavyweight lawyer’s card couldn’t hurt.
“Ever thought about going back to law?” Ryan’s voice softened.
“You went to Harborbrook University Law School, right? We’re alumni. I heard you were one of the top
graduates in your class.” He glanced at me.
I was shocked. ‘How did he know so much about me?‘
“I worked at a firm for a while after graduation, but quit to focus on my family after marrying Vincent.” I said, smiling awkwardly.
“Life is long,” Ryan said with a smile, “it’s never too late for a fresh start.”
“You’re still just as impressive as ever, while I-” I trailed off, feeling dejected.
I used to be so passionate about my career.
“We saw each other just last month.” Ryan said suddenly, giving me a knowing look. “Don’t you
remember?”
His smile left me stunned. I couldn’t understand what he meant.
Buried memories stirred, making me shiver.
Last month, at a party, there had been an intense, passionate encounter…
It was completely accidental. Something I’d buried deep down, forcing myself to forget.
My heart started racing as I looked Ryan up and down. ‘Could he have been that man from the party? But I didn’t remember seeing him there!‘
“Where did we meet?” I asked, confused.
He just smiled, and changed the subject, “I have to go now.”

As Ryan drove away, my thoughts were in turmoil.

I glanced at the hospital entrance–Vincent and Claire were gone. They probably hadn’t even noticed I was still there.
How pathetic.
I walked into St. Jude’s Hospital and headed straight to the inpatient ward.
Inside, my grandmother Josephine lay in bed, frail and withered.
My father passed away years ago, and at home, Mom only cared about my sister. She treated me like I was invisible. Grandma was the only one who truly loved me.
But my beloved grandmother was battling late–stage pancreatic cancer. The doctors said surgery wasn’t an option anymore.
Her greatest wish was to see Vincent and me have our wedding before she passed away.
Ironically, though Vincent and I had been married for six years, we’d never had a ceremony. I’d always dreamed of having a fairytale wedding, and maybe Grandma wanted to help me make that dream
come true.
I’d told Vincent about Grandma’s wish, and he promised we’d have a proper ceremony.
This long, overdue wedding was supposed to be in five days.
But now Claire was back…
“Gabby, you’re here again?” Grandma Josephine’s cloudy eyes lit up when she saw me.
I rushed to her, hugging her and kissed her cheek, I said out “I missed you.”
“Grandma, did you know my sister’s back?”
“Your sister’s back?” Grandma paused, her smile tinged with sadness. “She hasn’t visited me. Nobody
told me.”
“It’s okay, I’m sure she and Mom will come see you soon.” I held her cold hands. “Grandma, I’m waiting for you to get better.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “I’ll try my best to stay alive, at least until I see you and Vincent’s wedding. My Gabby, you’ll be the most beautiful bride.”
I choked up, struggling to hold back my tears. I couldn’t tell her that Vincent was with my sister right
now.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was Liz, the nanny.
I stepped into the hallway to take the call.
As soon as I answered, Liz’s terrified voice came through, “Ma’am, come home quickly! Something’s happened to Toby!”
My mind went blank. My blood turned to ice, “What happened! What’s wrong with Toby?”
Toby, my son–he was everything to me. The thought of anything happening to him made my stomach
drop.

The call suddenly dropped. Panicked, I tried calling back repeatedly, but couldn’t get through.
Just then, I saw Vincent and Claire walking toward me from down the hall.
Vincent was carrying a fruit basket, Claire holding his arm–they looked like a perfect couple.
I lost it. My emotions exploded as I rushed over and grabbed Vincent by the collar.
“Something’s happened to our son–did you even know that?” I screamed, my eyes wild with fear and
rage.
